Love the player, hate the contract.

Good for him, I guess... bad for the Leafs long term success.

Honestly insane. He was probably their best piece to move for a high tier dman. Instead the leafs are going to keep running the same lineup that's had no playoff success

And with a full NMC over the whole contract according to capfriendly.

You're kidding right? Surely they didn't give him a full NMC...

I've said a lot that Toronto has a problem with players wanting to be paid before showing the results of why they should get paid. Most everytime I'm told I don't know anything

He’s their only elimination game performer

And their only player that can enter the zone without getting a running start from their blue line

You can hate every other contract but this is good for the team

Okay but why now? Why did this have to happen in January? If you're going to pay him all this money, give him all this term, and a NMC/NTC, why not wait until June when you either know he's earned it or get him on a bit of a discount. It just makes no sense even if you think he's worth it

Yeah but this just sets another example that everyone there should ask for max value

If your best player takes a contract that isn’t the most on the team then it doesn’t say you should take max value

Also Marner and Tavares are up for a pay reduction which should help

You know, I forgot how bad Toronto signings are. Got spoiled by the tampa players taking discounts to win the cup.

It's a weird thing in sports. For most people, you get annual performance reviews -- did you hit your KPIs? What's your bonus this year, if any? A salary increase that tracks inflation, or maybe you're a better worker than that...

In sports: "how much revenue will this player create for us over this period" -- they are a product, and you're trying to recoup costs. Signing Nylander must at least create $11.5M in revenue for the leafs each year, right? In advertising, brand recognition, jersey sales, whatever. That's all that matters here. Not whether or not it makes the Leafs competitive. Not whether his value on the market is fair. And since Rogers and Bell own 75% of the company, they can make it happen, whether we want it to or not.

In many ways, the small markets are so much better off here. There's no way Chevy (in Winnipeg) would have signed this contract.

Sure, they're allowed to go for jersey sales and whatnot. Normally it makes me happier in the post season haha

I mean, seeing Toronto get their hopes up just to be smashed down again was hilarious, but yeah

Good for the Leafs they now have their best player with the 6th highest contract in the league and they finally were able to get term
