Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must be legitimate questions. All post titles must include a question.

Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-question posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

On fridays, you are allowed to post meme and troll questions, on the condition that it's in text format only, and conforms with our other rules. These posts MUST include the [NSQ Friday] tag in their title.

If you post a serious question on friday and are looking only for legitimate answers, then please include the [Serious] tag on your post. Irrelevant replies will then be removed by moderators.

Rule 7- You can't intentionally annoy, mock, or harass other members.

If you intentionally annoy, mock, harass, or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

MODERATORS

How do I make the politics and news subs go away? It's all ridiculously biased to the lib side and I'm as centrist/moderate as a human can possibly be, and don't want "news" from a polar source (and this joint definitely is).

I kinda want an "ALL" feed, to randomly wander around and figure out where I belong, but instead of the "memes and porn junk" everyone's complaining about, that I'd be pretty happy with, I got blue koolade nonstop.

Is there a fairly simple answer to this, or do I gotta go find specific subs and have only those be my feed?

"Reality has a well known liberal bias."

Hide the communities that talk about equality to make your own "safe space"!

Keep the fear of strangers flowing and nothing too cerebral. :P

There's three feeds: 'Subscribed', 'Local' and 'All'.

  • Subscribed is subs you've specifically subscribed to.
  • Local is subs hosted on the instance you're using.
  • All is every damn thing.

You can manually block subs from All, one at a time.

You can manually add subs to Subcribed, one at a time.

Or you can try to find an instance that mostly hosts the kind of thing you want to see, and rely on its 'local' feed as your filter.

Because that's what makes the fediverse different: anyone can make a lemmy server, and they can run it however they want. You want a lemmy for flat earthers, antivaxers, preppers, or young-earth creationists, you can go build one and hook it up to all the others. You can set whatever moderation and content policies you want on the thing, and that's absolutely fine.

However, other lemmy servers aren't obliged to communicate with your one. If they don't like your server, they can 'defederate' from it, and refuse to import your content.

It's a group chat for group-chats; you get separate cliques forming.

For instance, beehaw defederated from a huge chunk of lemmy servers when the reddit shitfire started; they wanted to keep their own vibe, and not have their communities overrun with a giant flood of bots and trolls and maga types. They're lefty as fuck over there, and they want to keep it that way.

And just recently, lemmy.world (and a bunch of others) defederated from exploding-heads, which was pretty much nothing but trolls and magas and racist fucks.

So it's possible that you can find a single server with a 'moderate centrism' spin and policy to suit, where you'll only see centrist-friendly subs hosted locally - and that may defederate other servers that are just too lefty for its users. Browse the other communities out there, read their policies, scroll through their local subs. If you find somewhere that works for you, bingo.

But honestly, you may not have a lot of luck. Lemmy started out with a bunch of green-lefty-progressive types, and that still defines a lot of its culture. Lemmy.ml is home to many of the largest communities out there, and though it may not be lefty as fuck, it's still lefty as heck. The lack of a top-down power structure tends to piss off the right wing, if nothing else. You may find a home for your views, but you're likely to discover that it has like 3 people on it, so... wooo yeah, party.

If even lemmy.world is too lefty for you, I suspect this may not be your ideal platform.

I don't hate lefties... I hate that if I find myself in a lefty circle jerk I feel obligated to defend the right, and I'm not a huge fan of the right at the moment... Mostly though, I just hate seeing (removed)...

Chaotic neutral problems :) I'd prefer the magas and socialists all got tossed into a single forum and had to sort this shit out... Nobody would enjoy it, but it would be collective progress instead of divergent.

Anyways, you didn't really give me a guide per se, but you put all the puzzle pieces in one spot for me and that's enough to be able to at least ponder it a bit and decide a direction to go in, so I thank you.

You can't control your impulses so you want to put yourself in an echo chamber?

Also, socialism is progress. That's the entire point. But I guess an enlightened centrist like yourself is beyond that kind of thinking.

Just subscribe to subs you want a use that.

As an aside, both the Democratic and Republican parties are right of center liberalism (as in there should be a free market with some degree of regulation to protect the public i.e the FDA). Centrism between those is just being slightly less conservative than your average Republican.

True centrism is halfway between fascism and communism.

[–] [email protected] 19 points 1 year ago

American centerists just don't want to admit they voted for Trump.

both the Democratic and Republican parties are right of center liberalism

We currently have:

  • a center-right party (the Democrats) who have tempered their "free trade, rising tide lifts all boats" NAFTA liberalism with some "made in America" economic nationalism lately; and
  • a far-right party (the Republicans) who are likely to nominate an outright fascist for their next presidential candidate — either a failed dictator, or a human trafficker — both of whom have promised to continue to abuse power to get revenge on their political enemies.

You are wrong. Democratic party is a far left party. And Republican party is a center right party

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

"Far left" generally refers to revolutionary communists and others who would oppose capitalism, nationalize industries, etc. — not to a party that seems to define its success in terms of the stock market going up and workers having high employment in private industry. The values and platform of the Democratic Party are solidly in support of globalized capitalism as a system, much more so today than in (e.g.) the FDR administration.

Again: When the stock market goes up and the workers are employed for private industry, the Democrats count that as a good thing for the nation. That is simply not a view compatible with being in the far left.

There's concern about business doing bad things, of course, like wage theft, pollution, or discriminating against minorities — but this doesn't come from anti-capitalism: rather, the view is that capitalism works best when government keeps business honest. The goal is for capitalism to succeed and cause general prosperity — "a rising tide lifts all boats" — not to overthrow capitalism and replace it with a command economy as in Leninism or Maoism.

I would agree that the Republicans have previously been center-right, e.g. in the Reagan and Bush era. However, their embrace of antidemocratic principles (e.g. voting restriction), ideological and tactical alignment with the international far-right (including Putin's Russia), abuse of business regulation to punish political dissent (see DeSantis vs. Disney), targeting of religious and sexual minorities (Muslims, LGBTQ+), harassment & abuse of refugees (see the DeSantis/Abbott human-trafficking campaigns), and embrace of political violence (see alignment with militia and street-fighting groups; also January 6), have all shown a strong migration towards the far-right.

It's possible that the Republicans could return to the center-right, but it would require at least ejecting the outright fascists & felons. Trouble is, those are right at the top. So long as the Republican Party is taking its direction from people like Trump, DeSantis, Greene, or Boebert, it is clearly a far-right party.

ridiculously biased to the lib side and I’m as centrist/moderate

but … but … liberal IS centrist

are you somehow confusing liberal with left because they both start with ‘L’? I can assure you the left hates liberals even more than you apparently do …

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago

You just have to block them all individually. I’m very far left but find news/politics too stressful, and I just want to use lemmy for memes and fun shit, so I’ve been blocking them all. I browse all new and join/block communities as I see them pop up.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Depending on your views you may want another instance.

Wow such an insightful comment

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

So a few options (I'm on kbin but similar):

  • move to an instance where the users aren't signed up to those communities (remember All is not the whole fediverse, All is just the content that is local to that instance plus that users on your instance have subbed to. On a big instance you will see a lot in all)
  • block individual communities or entire instances. I have been blocking the numerous meme communities for example which tidies up my All feed, but it is tedious as there are so many
  • browse Lemmy or Kbin using Subbed instead of All or Local views. On kbin you can do that by going to /sub, clicking the link on the toolbar or setting it as your default view.
  • create your own personal instance of lemmy or kbin and only sign up for content you want on that aerver. You can browse new communities to join via other instances then add it to your instance.

I was blocked from posting anything on c/world, because I offered dissenting opinion. Now I block them instead
