On this day in 1837, Africans and Native Americans who had formed Florida's Seminole Nation decisively defeated an invading U.S. force more than twice their size, led by slaveowner and future U.S. president Zachary Taylor.

Since the founding of the U.S., escaped African slaves had settled in modern-day Florida. At the same time, Seminoles suffering under Creek rule in Alabama and Georgia were fleeing south to seek independence. There, the two groups formed an alliance, sharing cultivation techniques and putting up armed resistance against colonization and slaver forces.

The U.S. repeatedly invaded territory controlled by this alliance, and, on Christmas Day in 1837, 380 to 480 Seminole fighters gathered on the northeast corner of Florida's Lake Okeechobee ready to halt the armies of Colonel Zachary Taylor, a Louisiana slaveholder and future U.S. president.

Seminole riflemen waited for the soldiers in trees, firing on them from above. The battle was a decisive defeat for U.S. forces, however Taylor falsely claimed a victory when returning to Fort Gardner.

all-my-apes-gone thought I was pushing the "Delete my Cookies" button in chrome after the site wouldn't log me in.

Actually pushed the "Delete all saved login information for everything everywhere" button. Guess I get some free OpSec, but I liked my old account.

I posted four days ago that I would be offline for a while to spend time with my family. However, my brother contracted COVID, so I'll be staying home until early 2024. While I don't mind it too much, I feel bad for my parents; I'm sure they would have appreciated us all being together. I plan to call them every day until the new year. Also, this means I'll be posting here occasionally

there's this guy on Steam who calls me sometimes, and we both speak English, but the difference between our dialects is so extreme we can't understand each other at all. It's a shame because he sounds really friendly, we just can't understand each other.

Sorting by controversial and, oh wow this place got way better after y'all removed downvotes. It's almost as if negative reinforcement turn people neurotic. Or at the very least becomes the worst incentive possible.

you know the one thing i didnt like about FD's newest vid is that it didnt talk about how a huge rise to jack harlows success was that he pandered to black women. like black women were the main one promoting him and making edits and simping under his vids because he regularly simped for black women online.he also made a lot of jokes where he flirted with men and lil nas x and the gays loved that. im saying pandering works and he was going for black women and queer people and i think that helped him.

Finally saw that napoleon movie on christmas and damn it slandered napoleon so hard, no wonder french people hated it.

It depicted josephine as younger than napoleon and made napoleon slap her when by historical accounts he never did that.

A positive of this Christmas was I did a lot of flirting. I'm probably going to be meeting a modestly high level State Department diplomat in the vaguely near future (one of my relatives best friends), and I'm not sure how I feel about that.

My uncle called to tell me Merry Christmas and congratulations on my marriage. The advice he gave me was to "pound that fine ass as much as you can before it becomes gross and saggy when she hits 40."

I can always rely on him to have the worst takes about women. He's twice divorced too.
