I'm wondering if you know about any creators making analysis or historical commentary on film.

The only one I know is Every Frame a Painting, can you recommend others in a similar vein?

Captain Disillusion! More VFX than anything else. He debunks viral videos and explains how the effects are achieved.

His video on the special effects of Fight of the Navigator is one of the best "making of" videos I've seen. They should license it and put it on the Blu-ray, it's that good.

Captain disilusion

If you are lucky you get one video a year, but it will be good

Nerdstalgic, CinemaStix, CGY, Corridor Crew, captainmidnight are some of my favorites. Some of these focus on TV series too, up to you if you're into that

[–] [email protected] 4 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Seconding Corridor Crew, they have so many amazing series on these topics.

They sadly let some questionable connections shine through every now and then. Nothing terrible but enough to make me more cautious of opinions of theirs than i used to be

It started with some "funny" jabs at wearing masks during late pandemic, aaand they hang (afaik, at least never said otherwise) with black rifle coffee co guys, who are all kinds of problematic.

Nerdwriter, KaptainKristian, Lessons from the Screenplay

Lessons from the Screenplay is great but seems like he hasn't released a new video in a very long time :(

I loved their content in college, even supported them on Patreon. Then they dipped into video game content, apparently got hired by BioWare, and transitioned to their podcast (which appears to still be active).

What a disappointment!

Is the podcast not as good as the videos were?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

They’re not really structured. It’s more of a panel than a video essay, which is what I was there for. It’s still good content but I’m not looking to add more hour long podcasts, especially when I don’t even watch half of the movies they cover

In a similar vein: Patrick (H) Willems

Not in a similar vein but funny: Red letter media

[–] [email protected] 6 points 11 months ago

The only YouTube series I follow is RedLetterMedia: https://piped.video/@RedLetterMedia

VFX? Captain Disillusion.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 11 months ago

Corridor crew, they've given me a lot of insight regarding vfx and editing, and i genuinely have learned a lot from them. Quite an inspiring group of people imo!

[–] [email protected] 5 points 11 months ago

Don't know if in similar vein at all, but corridor and corridor crew

[–] [email protected] 5 points 11 months ago

I really enjoy Thomas Flight - very high-quality film/filmmaking video essays.

I used to follow corridor crew before they started huffing their own farts.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago

I got odd cryptochud vibes that I couldnt put my finger on. I heard they did a video on Twin Peaks The Return and that sounds like a comedy sketch with a narrow appeal.

Surprised to not see anyone in here mention Movies with Mikey (on YouTube under FilmJoy). He does really thoughtful movie analysis with great audio and video production. He's one of my favorite creators.

He's also on Nebula for people who'd rather see a video edit that can employ fair use without being taken down automatically.

CinemaStix (directing, writing, some production)

Mr. Sunday Movies (podcast format of western pop culture media)

For TV and movies, I like Screen Crush. Their humor is perfect for me, I like their mascot dog, and the ads aren't as bad as New Rockstars.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago

Maggie Mae Fish, Thomas Flight, Captain Disillusion

Pop Culture detective is really good. I especially like their video about Fantastic Beasts

All the ones mentioned already are great! I also like Filmmaker IQ:

And I'm going to leave a link to a story breakdown of Terminator 2 that is my bible. Absolutely worth a watch if you're into film analysis:

making analysis or historical commentary on film

I've been really enjoying the podcast Four Play on the Last Free Nation Culture channel: https://piped.video/@LastFreeNationCulture https://www.youtube.com/@LastFreeNationCulture

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

More on topic: I highly recommend Jared Bauer and Wisecrack if you like philosophy, politics, and how it relates to media.

Less historical, more comedic: After Hours, Cracked (their older stuff), and Dr. Jordan Breeding are comedic analysis of various media.

In depth analysis/socio-political insights/research: Jessie Gender for various insights into media (including animated shows like Lower Decks and Invincible).

Animation, I like Johnny 2 Cellos and Offbeat Kiki. Johnny in particular posts more often and has in depth takes, but Kiki, when she does post gives more nuanced takes imho.

Actual amazing animated projects you can watch on Youtube include Lackadaisy, Helluva Boss, and Hazbin Hotel.

Enjoy.

Dial the Gate. Series of interviews with people involved in making of Stargate TV show (not just actors bit people at every level). It's over 200 episodes now.

No, I don't.
