Hurling ordure at the TREACLES, especially those closely related to LessWrong.

AI-Industrial-Complex grift is fine as long as it sufficiently relates to the AI doom from the TREACLES. (Though TechTakes may be more suitable.)

This is sneer club, not debate club. Unless it's amusing debate.

[Especially don't debate the race scientists, if any sneak in - we ban and delete them as unsuitable for the server.]

They've been pumping this bio-hacking startup on the Orange Site (TM) for the past few months. Now they've got Siskind shilling for them.

I'm only interested if the bacteria is diamondoid.

I like that instead of a study to back up their project, they have... one guy! Who tried it a month ago!

"Where we're going... we don't need clinical trials!"

As always with rats you get call-backs to more or less bad SF. In Varley's Steel Beach, the universal AI keeping everyone "happy" on the Moon invents a nanobot that cleans your teeth and gives your breath a minty fresh flavor. The leader of la Resistance naturally hacks it to disable it, no Man is gonna prevent me from having filthy teeth!

Also in on of Paul McAuley's short stories, the main character reflects on the total destruction of the Earth's ecosphere, which was caused by a genetically modified perfect coffee plant which took over all of life.

Idle thought: the idea of having a mint taste in my mouth (and on my breath) every day sounds like one form of hell

Chewing gum fans may want a word.

One of these is by choice Another of these is by proposed irreversible microbiome fuckery

We are not the same

In the same way you don't taste your mouth all the time you would stop tasting and smelling it.

Neurons downregulate under constant exposure, which is why people at cons aren't constantly disgusted at how unshowered they are.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

Someone tell Aella her neurons are downregulating, maybe she’ll start showering again

I remember this... wasn't this on old Sneerclub?

I think the consensus was, you still need to brush your teeth to avoid gingivitis, which is at least as big a deal for dental health as caries.

It's from today's acx, apparently they offered free samples to the siskind household.

edit: this is not sarcasm.

I thought this looked kind of interesting and not especially grifty apart from the usual anti-FDA narrative up until

The plan is:

Phase 1: (January 2024) Sell to biohackers in Prospera for $20,000.

By good luck, Prospera will soon be hosting a two month super-conference of biotech and crypto entrepreneurs/enthusiasts.

whence my eyes did an uzumaki. And also Aela is somehow involved, apparently.

Give them the benefit of a doubt, sure, maybe they are pandering this hard to an audience that self selects for gullibility and cultbrain and against consumer protections strictly for the greater good, merely accelerating what should have already happened if it weren't for those meddlin' kids at the FDA.

Am I a Bad Person for hoping this is also a super-spreader event?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago

Literally BioShock.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

benefit of the doubt

It isn't just cultbrain, but also a big dose of science fiction and tech hopium. A decade+ ago Lepht Anonym gonzo biohacked themselves to have magnets in their fingers, and this (together with some other science media and science fiction media) set off quite a wave of biohackers. This is just the tail end of the more speculative part of that wave. ('biohacking' (bit nebulous term) can have some good results when people learn how to homebrew hormones or insulin, so don't throw out the meds with the bathwater and mint breath baby)

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

to be fair, absolutely every person (a) in Prospera (b) who would pay $20k for this absolutely deserves to

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago

e/acc where the E stands for “extraction” and acc still means accelerationism.

Between this and no showering, Aella et al. going for that Low% bathroom speedrun. We should pitch a “biohacking” startup that is just adult diapers.

Also “defying cavity” is too good for siskind to have written it.

Huh? oh. This prospera. https://www.astralcodexten.com/p/prospectus-on-prospera

Does anyone have any updates on wtf is even going on there? Is it actually the libertarian utopia that I was promised? Or is it just a place for people with nice comfy remote jobs to exploit cheap Honduran labor to live large.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

you have guessed correctly. Honduras is trying to kick out all the libertarian charter cities, but Prospera has Thiel backing and is clinging on for dear life.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago

@dgerard Thiel and Andreessen. I love the way that as soon as the Hondurans started saying mean things these proud libertarians went crying straight to the US State Department.
