They recently were talking it down. They may be finished taking it down by now. Was strange to see something so old finally being taken down.

when a black man was accused of a crime in south florida in the 1920 there was a system by black floridians at the time to smuggle people to the florida keys because the cops/lynch mob couldnt get out there quickly. pretty cool.
Enslaved people in Florida would be sheltered by the Seminoles, if I recall that correctly. It was certainly true in Louisiana of its native population.

they built a railroad out to key west, and then just let the tracks rot. You can still see much of the rails and supports still out there.
One of the most wild things I've seen is the elevation signage in the Everglades, just north of the keys. They range from 0-1m above sea level. The ecosystems change drastically depending on minuscule differences, with forests on hills that you can't even distinguish from the grass marshes beneath them. It's like the first time I saw a massive wildfire, this feeling of existential dread as it suddenly becomes clear just how vulnerable we are to climate change. An area that took five hours to drive across, one of the most ecologically vital places on the continent, will just be gone.
It's ok, we'll just convert north Florida into the new Everglads

Until I went to the Keys, I thought everyone was just joking about this place called Florida. It's like being in biology class and not being 100% sure if narwhals are mythical but you just go along with it.
