Communities. They're called communities.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 year ago (6 children)

Yeah, but how to shorten it??

Comms?

[–] [email protected] 27 points 1 year ago (4 children)

moons

Short for 'munities.

They orbit the central world of the instance.

Isn't the short form of communist just "socialist"?

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

No, no, the short form of communist is Lenin, he was about 5'4.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Oh that makes more sense. Thanks for the correction

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

All communists are socialists but not all socialists are communists, it is a broader term.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Socialism β‰  Communism.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Yup. I was joking. Making fun of the right wing who pretty much use the terms interchangeably

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah, but how to shorten it??

Just 'c'.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

I shall hereby always refer to them as /c/'s then.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

You don't. We live in the wonderful age of keyboard predictions where you type. Comm and community and communities both pop up as options. You'd have to take extra steps to get it any shorter.

Unless, like anyone with sense, you just type c/ or c/s and have done with it :)

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I've been calling them forums

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Cums or cummies?

[–] [email protected] 60 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Gotta be honest: I’m all for communities. Hate magazines.

[–] [email protected] 27 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If we're being honest, I hate magazine less than I hate sublemmy.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I hate u/spez less then I hate sublemmy

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 year ago

Me too. That magazine thing confused me at the start.

Sails are hoisted shipmate! Tell the captain we are running downwind heading for the great treasure!

[–] [email protected] 24 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I like "communities" but the problem is that in a broader context, no one will know what you are talking about. "I saw it in the memes community" sounds too vague. Saying "I saw it on the memes subreddit" is perfectly clear. Because of this, I think "sublemmy" is a better, more descriptive term.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago (2 children)

That’s inherent to the fediverse. You have to specify which instance you’re referring to. The wording between β€œcommunity” or β€œsublemmy” isn’t actually helpful when you have to provide the instance domain anyway.

And sites have always had features like communities and groups, so it's not out of the ordinary to say which service the group is hosted on.

Communities or magazines on kbin.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

I do like sublemmies though...

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 year ago

"communities" are what they are called.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago

I'm not sure I can narrow it down that much, but my favorite instance is Solarpunk (slrpnk.net), it's got a load of communities I'm interested in.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

Easy: c/sublemmunities

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm a weed head and it's always nice to talk to like-minded people

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Loved that the community kept the name.
