I ignore the existence of that and so far it hasn't seemed to matter.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I messed with those settings before and it mattered a bunch and gave me all kind of issues

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Same, I’ve just been hoping that I’m seeing all the content and it’s back to normal now

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

[Undetermined]

The other day, I started to not be able to comment, only on some replies, without applying a language, which I selected to be English. Other replies, let me keep it Select language/untouched. This is in comments though, not for posts.

Same lol. I managed to break both my community as well as the entire instance by messing with those settings. The UI could be a bit more user friendly on that imo.

Right now the language selector has become the part of the admin UI that no one on my team is allowed to touch, under death threath, lmao.

Create posts myself from Liftoff app. Do not have that choice (problem) at all 😊

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

because the problem only comes up if you do lol. if one day they cut that feature out, you won't even notice anything change.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

I still get the "language not allowed" every now and then when commenting even though I set it to english

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

you can select more then one!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Than*

“There are more than 100 cans of beans in Martha’s pantry.”

“Jimmy ate a big bowl of baked beans and then had vanilla bean ice cream for dessert.”

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's too late for me... I've been fuckin up English for almost 50 years

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

Zero judgment. Hopefully it will help others then. Lol.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

I had to play with these after I tired to post somewhere and it told me “language not accepted”. Setting English cleared this up so I could comment.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Isn't that just saying "most content is set to undetermined"? I.e. most posters don't care.

I think most users/viewers would have English and undetermined set, so it should be a good idea to use English for English content.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I wish more posters would use it so foreign language posts wouldn’t show up in my All so much lol. It’d be nice if you could have a default language that set your posts to that and you could change it if you want. I imagine 99+% of posters will only ever post in one language.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

#shitamericanssay

More than 60% of Europeans speak more than one language.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

True, and I agree 99% isn't true, but I don't think 40% is either.
I speak two languages fluently and have somewhat of an understanding of a third, yet have still posted 100% in English so far... and that's not my native language.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Wasn't trying to argue it was 40%, was just trying to give an example of why the "99%" figure was laughably off base.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

"Foreign" languages communities aren't big enough on Lemmy for people to only post in them. Most people will post in English too.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah 99% was definitely an overstatement, honestly I forgot the fact that people would still post in English even if it isn’t their own language just because of how ubiquitous it is online. I still think the feature would help a lot and it wouldn’t make it any harder than the current state for people that do post in multiple languages.

so much for a picture of beans

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

So sad to see this place fall off. Truly a shadow of its former self.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (2 children)

What do you mean? Kbin and lemmy are thriving?

[–] [email protected] 14 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Just a dumb joke about the lack of beans.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I'm calling for a Lemmy blackout until the bean content returns!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Bean the change you want to see in the world.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I miss the whoosh subreddit

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

There needs to be a default posting language you can set in your profile

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Those settings seemed to do nothing on my end.

At least I didn't understand how.
