I've been looking into the Fediverse and it seems like something I want to get more accustomed to. But iw as wondering if there was an email one based on it? I've got like Gmail and outlooks. But I also have a rarely used protonmail. So, I was wondering, is Proton good enough. Or is there a Fediverse alternative?

I understand all of this now. I just made a dumb mistake when looking at the Fediverse umbrella. Leaving it in hopes someone else may need it.

Email is the original fediverse. Just spin off your MTA of choice and suffer trying to convince everyone else you’re not in it for spam.

That's good with me, I did misunderstanding ot, that's where this whole thing came from. I've got it now though

E-Mail is a federated standard, so in that sense every mail provider is part of the fediverse.

I think you are confusing fediverse with non profit and/or open source

If that is your question than yes there are alternatives out there. For example murena, the organisation behind the degoogled android fork /e (more information)

Thata kinda what I did. i saw this, and it just threw me off as iw as chaning my lemmy email, and settong up mastodon and matrix. u

Email is already federated. You can simply run your own email server (pick any of the widely used open source email servers) or join an email server that already exists (like Gmail, Hotmail, etc.)

Since email is a huge pain to host, it’s usually much better to just use one of the existing bigger services if you want to ensure your mail always gets to the recipient without being marked as spam.

As far as I know email is an entirely different protocol than the fediverse so they wouldn’t coincide. It’s possible someone hosts an email server alongside their fediverse server but that’s not really the same thing as it being part of the fediverse.

Yeah they're not compatible, Fediverse uses the ActivityPub protocol and email uses the SMTP protocol. There is and was an SMTP based system with very similar architecture to the Fediverse. It's called Usenet which is one of the original TCP/IP services dating back to the invention of the internet. It was popular in its time, but has mostly fallen into obscurity. Usenet is still around, but mainly used for file sharing these days. Back in its day you commonly accessed it with an email client, but modern email clients don't support it. Though there's still modern Usenet clients out there.

Email is based on Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP), defined by the IETF under an RFC or many.

The Fediverse is based on ActivityPub, out of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), the same folks who brought us HTML and HTML/2

They are wholly different.

I can recommend getting serious with Proton and getting rid of Gmail. I've started two years ago and now I have the Gmail account only for some historical stuff, I use it like once a month.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

To be honest. I don't really use Gmail. Only for YouTube, and my phone, as its stick android. And yes, I am aware that's a bit shit. But, I can't be arsed fucking about woth rooting and flashing and all that. Gmail is for like things I don't care about. And I've got a main Hotmail from absolutely years ago. It must be at least 14 years old at this point which has near enough everything on it. And I really can't be arsed moving everything over. But whenever I make a new account I'm gonna use proton. And if there's things that I do care about. I'll likely move those big ones over.

I love protonmail, I’ve had it for several years now. Tutanota is another good alternative as well and it’s cheaper compared to proton.

May I ask what you use as a Google Drive/Photos alternative? I've already ditched Gmail but I'm having a hard time finding private alternatives for these two services

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

For Google Drive I use Proton Drive, Photos I still haven't migrated, but I'm not a photo person, it's not a priority.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

How happy are you with ProtonDrive? Last time I took a look at it, they just launched it and it was only the web version. Looks like they now have mobile apps but still no desktop client?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I use it only for sharing external files, so desktop client doesn't really matter to me. I haven't much tried even the mobile apps, my flow is pretty much upload file via web, copy link and send it (it was the same with Google Drive for me). For automatic synchronization of files I use a mix of Synology Drive and Syncthing.

Hmm alright. I move around a lot, so a NAS isn't a great option for me, hence looking into cloud services. Thanks though.

If you're willing to self-host, check out Immich. It's pretty much the go to google photos replacement.

You cannot compare these things with another. Email is much different to lemmy/mastodon. It's like they're two different languages; both do have a syntax or grammar, though they live in different universes so to speak.

Offtopic: has anyone seen a ELI5 community in the lemmyverse so far? I'd like to join there!
