I've tried a few but none give me the same super functional feeling RIF gave me. Jerboa isn't bad which is what I'm using now but I'd like something a little closer to RIF. Any suggestions?

Jerboa, set to list view in the top right menu is super close, IMO.

As a former RIF user, I agree, but it's been less stable than other apps lately, so I've started to use some other apps (mostly conneci) more

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Excellent suggestion - it's much better.

I always used the card view in RIF, so Jerboa felt super familiar immediately. I'm glad it was the first app I landed on

Have you checked out wefwef.app? It's a browser based app (type it into your browser and then add it as an "app" on your homescreen), which I don't normally like, but it functions fairly well. It doesn't quite look like RIF and instead has more of an iOS look to it...but it is also more "bare bones" in appearance than other Lemmy apps seem to be. So it's simple look reminds me of RIF in a way.

So far I've only tried out a few apps tho personally. I'm still hunting for my daily driver as well.

Seconded wefwef.app. Super cool that it’s a PWA. I was both a big time RiF and Apollo user and this definitely scratches that itch

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I like this a lot I just wish it was an actual app and not something I have to go into a browser for. If it gets ported onto the play store or something I'd consider it.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You can install the PWA and it’ll be exactly like an app

How does this work on Android? I already tried this before and it did nothing.

Edit: Nevermind I tried it on chrome and it worked. Firefox wasn't working.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

What browser are you using? Installing it from the settings tab in wef wef should create a home screen app under most circumstances. But if you are trying to install it using using an obscure internet browser, it might not work. I use Brave and it worked just fine. It should also work with Chrome and Firefox.

You don't need to use either of these browsers as your default...you just need to have one of them installed on your phone to navigate to the website and install the app.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I figured it out. Just had to use chrome.

This is pretty nice. Never used Apollo but its solid. I still want my RIF fix more!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

So I think with some fiddling with the settings, Thunder ends up looking closer to RIF than wefwef, but it's too buggy for me.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

You can open your browser menu when in wefwef and press "install" to install it like a native app. I'm a RiF user in exile and Connect for Lemmy with list view and the AMOLED theme hits pretty similar notes as RiF, its my main driver right now.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

It’s basically a pixel perfect copy of Apollo

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'd say check out connect and liftoff

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Tried liftoff earlier but it seems to lock me out of certain instances I know aren't defederated. Otherwise I'd like it. Maybe I'll try it again when it's got some more dev time.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Liftoff wasn't recognizing the instance im on before, but now i tried it again and it worked, just wrote the url there and it connected, using it right now, seems really nice

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'll give it another shot soon.

Liftoff is working pretty well for me. Supports multiple accounts, fairly intuitive UX.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

+1, Liftoff is pretty good. I'm a Sync user and decently happy with Liftoff while I wait

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Agreed, the ability to seamlessly switch between which instance you're viewing from and which account to use is really cool. It makes me wish I had a desktop client with that option (which probably exists honestly, I'm just not aware of one)

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

There's several clients in the works - I'll be looking at Sync for Lemmy, as I was a customer of Sync for Reddit.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

Same. Sync takes up entirely too much real estate in my muscle memory and it really fucks with me to use Jerboa. Hopefully the dev can get that MVP out the door by the end of the month~ not looking forward to purchasing it again though considering I'm broke and have no digital money 😞

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I tried Jerboa and Connect but having most success with wefwef. They all work fine but wefwef just feels most familiar.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

What is the difference between Jerboa and wefwef? I have seen wef been suggested a lot and like most people I don't like change. So why would I want to switch to wefwef? Is it more stable or something?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It depends on what you have used before, it's just down to personal preference. I used Apollo and RIF for years and wefwef looks and feels similar, so I find I'm focusing more on the content rather than the interface.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Any experience (or anyone reading) with Baconreader? That used to be my goto on android.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm using Connect for Lemmy right now. While it has a card node, you can switch to list.

It''s still not a perfect equivalent, but it kinda... gets close, I guess? 🤷

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago

Yeah, it's not perfect but it's close enough that I'm happy with it until Sync and/or Boost releases. I'd love for the rif dev to make a lemmy app, but I guess they're throwing their weight behind tildes instead.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago

I'm using Jerboa as well for now. I'd say we'll have to wait a month or so before the dev's who had Reddit apps move to Lemmy. I know the devs of "Sync for Reddit" and "Boost for Reddit" are making Lemmy versions of their apps so fingers crossed more devs follow suit!

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I come from RIF too. I tried jerboa but I'm using thunder with compact view now

[–] Paralda 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Thunder with compact view or Jerboa are the closest atm.

Honestly Thunder has some really great features like swipe to upvote, but I'm missing things like one handed zoom, jump to parent comment, comment sorting, etc.

It's an alpha though, and the Dev is pretty active. I imagine it'll get these things in time.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I've installed Jebroa but it seems to be a bit fucky for me, (Pixel 6, GrapheneOS ROM which probably doesn't help), hopefully it gets better with time. Gonna give thunder a go

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

I’m using Memmy at the moment. It was heavily inspired by Apollo for Reddit (which I used) so I’m happy enough. There are a couple issues still (it’s still hinder development) but as long as you ignore errors when posting and don’t try to resubmit it seems pretty stable to me.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It says it's on Android too but I don't see anywhere to download the Android version.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I poked through the code some. They have some instructions to build the code for Android but I didn't see any built apks. They still have it marked as prerelease, so they may just be focusing on iOS for now.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

I know that Sync for lemmy is being worked on, but so far I have been using Jerboa and its just ok, not great.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Slightly off-topic. I was a RIF user but switched to RedReader, which still works, and can be just as minimal.

Unfortunately that page is missing a lot of options, I don't know who's managing it but it would be nice if it was updated

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Perhaps you might volunteer?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

People have already been much more diligent than I, if you are looking for some inspiration, such as here: https://lemmy.world/post/465785 - hope this helps

Echoing some other sentiments from here, I used RIF and am currently using wefwef.app. I've only tried a couple, but I like this one quite a bit. Just go to Settings > Install App
