I’ve been playing the game since it was released on Switch. It was actually pretty great. But heck, there were a lot of crashes.

I’m playing on my M1 Max now and it’s brilliant. The detail it’d been missing out on…!

I know Mac’s aren’t known for gaming but I’m so glad that this game was one of the first that got ported over to Mac silicon.

The only issue I have is that my controller drops out and reconnects every 15 mins. Have to wire it in to avoid the drop outs. Have reported the issue to hello games.

Running it on a Mac mini M1 here. Runs smooth. Haven’t had any controller issues using an Xbox One controller.

Yeah that’s interesting. I’m using a PS5 controller as that was recommended for Mac. I’ve also tried with my Switch Pro controller. Same deal with both. Drops out after 15mins when on wireless. When wired it’s all good.

Also NMS is the only game so far the this happens with. I’ve tried it with Bastion and wireless never drops out.

I think it has something to do with NMS and Steam not agreeing on the status of the controller. I think steam by default shuts it down after 15mins. There’s a setting for that and I switched it off but it didn’t fix the issue.

Maybe with more people reporting it will get bumped up the bug fix schedule.

I am giving my 2018 MBA too my daughter when she starts college in the fall. I am thinking of replacing it with one of the new MBAs. Unsure if I want to stick with a 13" or get a 15", but either way i am excited to play NMS on it.

16" M1 Max MBP. Works great except the rare crash or weird glitch (planet doesn't fully render and I can't land). Plays great with keyboard + touchpad.

Funny you mentioned that. Be played through the Singularity expedition with maybe one crash.

Just today I had this issue where I couldn’t land on a planet as it wouldn’t load. I thought it was some new kind of gas giant plane that had no surface for a minute. Restarted the game and all was well.

I play this primarily on my M1 Max mbp, even though I also sometimes play on my desktop. I have the same issue with a ps4 controller, so I connect it.

What’s interesting to note is that I have fewer hitches on the mbp than on my desktop with a 3080 10gb, and I’m not sure what’s the reason for that. My theory is either vram limits or the mbp memory bus hides a lot of that with its speed.

Definitely not a VRAM thing - I play with a 3090 (24gb) and get tons of hitching. Haven’t had the chance to try on apple silicon but I suspect the performance is due to the really strong CPU cores. NMS is a very cpu intensive game.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Ok surely it's not VRAM. But my cpu is a 12700k, and while it's not the fastest anymore, you would think it's enough for this game. It's using some fairly standard DDR4 ram, though. Not the fastest nor the slowest. I do wonder if memory bandwidth speed has anything to do with it, but it's all speculation.

Yeah this controller issue on Mac for NMS seems pretty common. Another commenter on this thread mentioned they don’t get the issue with their Xbox controller. I’ve tried with both a PS5 and Switch Pro controller, same issue.

That is interesting about the fewer hitches. On switch is was constant. So the difference is night and day for me. But respect for the effort of porting it to the switch.

I’m really glad that Mac is starting to see some gaming love. Hope it continues, especially with the success of PortingKit.

I’ve had the same issue with my controller. Been connecting it with usb to avoid the disconnects.

Been having a lot of fun in it.

I think it’s worth us all reporting the wireless controller bug to Hello Games.

https://hellogames.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/115000520485-I-have-an-issue-to-report

It will help them prioritise the issue and it’ll hopefully get addressed in one of the many patches they’ve been rolling out.

I primarily play on my Series X and occasionally PC so be cross save, but I did try it in my M1 Pro MBP when it dropped. I was impressed but not surprised. The Apple silicon has been bonkers.
