Still trying to find my footings. The thing I miss most is active engagement. The comment sections sometimes feel so empty. But I will give it time. All in all, I find the experience better than I anticipated. Using wefwef on my phone and the instance-site on my desktop and laptop. I am sure a decent app will be developed in time.

I felt that at first but I've found the engagement to be more meaningful here when it does happen, even though it's sometimes sparse or not at all. I came in the previous influx after spez started forcing subs open. I don't really miss it that much now.
I was pretty much a strict lurker on Reddit, so the smaller community here is certainly a bit of a change for me. Only thing for me to do is to change my habits with it, and start actually joining in and adding to the conversations.
Howdy!
In recognition of your contribution to the community, I present you with the coveted Lemmy Lemon award.
🍋
Please let's make the Lemmy Lemon award an unofficially official thing. After reading that I want people to use it more
As a former reddit lurker, I like the more low-key engagement here. It feels more welcoming.
You have summed up my feelings exactly.
Greetings, fellow lurker! The torch has been passed. It our turns to carry it until the communities grow larger and we can receed back to the shadows
I also didn't even bother engaging on Reddit at all, but doing so on Lemmy feels way more worth it for some reason
One thing I certainly don’t miss from Reddit is the top voted comment is always some lame pun or some tired phrase that has been repeated a thousand times before.
I've found myself actually reading articles since I can't go in and just read someone else's synopsis of the content, which frankly is a good thing. I can get my own information and form my own opinions, Reddit just let me be lazy but it's a nice change.
As for engagement, just be the change your wish to see, and engagement will follow. I think there is still some fine tuning to be done in terms of the sorting algorithms as well, which would ideally get day old content out and active but fresh content in. A lot of dust left to settle with the great migration underway.
Remember to be commenting on stuff that don’t have comments to drive engagement! It’s important for all of us to do our part
I was a somewhat massive lurker on reddit, I didn't bother engaging much because I knew 60% of the time the reply would be snippy, even if my post wouldn't be remotely combative. So over the years I just stopped bothering mostly.
My inbox has kicked off more here in the last week than probably the last 365 days on reddit. It's really wholesome, for lack of a better term.
All it takes if you commenting, to fire off more comments just like now. It's good shit!
I sort by new mostly and if I find something interesting I write a comment trying to startup some conversations. The more people do this, the faster the community will grow.
Mlem and Memmy are quite tolerable
I tried both but decided to go with memmy, but each are great choices.
Same. Both have their quirks but Memmy seems more polished overall.
Liftoff app is my favorite at the moment. Very responsive and handle well multiple account.
I'm very happy this space is flourishing. Lots of organic conversation and increased engagement. My only hope is that this revolt against corporate social media will be sustained. I would love to see this turn in to an existential threat to the companies selling our data and privacy to the highest-bidding advertiser.
The fediverse faces structural issues of its own, but they're different issues than corporate social media, which gives me a lot of hope that they can outlive them. I really want Lemmy and Mastodon to become the norm, they would be much healthier online spaces for everyone.
Hello fell Reddit Refugees! Yeah I've been a near daily reddit user on Sync for Reddit (Sync Pro) since 2014 or so. Now leading up to the API shutdown I was using reddit about once a week and you already know I had to use Sync one last time on the final day, but
I've mostly been using Lemmy for about two weeks now. I've tried a lot of apps (Jeroba, Thunder, Liftoff), but ultimately I also ended up on wefwef. It's seems to be the one of snappier ones so far. It's super strange because since it is themed after Apollo, it looks like I have an iPhone app on my Android! I know that when Sync for Lemmy comes out (about six weeks I think) I'll jump ship immediately, but for now I'm really liking wefwef.
I've made it my mission to lurk less on Lemmy then I did on Reddit so I can try and help the platform succeed with some small amounts of content that I can contribute. Recently I've been very interested in AI image generation, so I made a community centered around that. I also made a community centered around video game giveaways to hopefully share more wholesome content on the platform. Overall, I'm hoping that since Lemmy is so new that all of us can take some control in steering it in an overall better direction than Reddit. I'm personally on team No Karma, since I think it makes Lemmy a lot less toxic and a lot less about having something to brag about and more about being something to be proud of.
Good luck to everyone who's a recovering Reddit addict with their quests to become Fediverse addicts!
Edit: Wefwef accidentally posted my comment 3 times saying it failed to post. So I guess there's still some kinks to work out!
I knew I had an issue with the amount of time I spent on Reddit.
But good lord the repeated opening of Reddit Sync to no avail over the past days really driven home just how much I just defaulted to Reddit in any dead time.
I had to delete RIF because of how many times I just get auto opening it.
It is quite sad and yet at the same time also an exciting time. I was on Reddit for 9 years and it has kind of become the internet for me.
I myself was 99% only a passive user, so I have contributed nothing to the value of the site. But the site itself had a lot to offer for me.
But I also realized that Reddit, the platform itself, hardly provides anything relevant.
I probably would never have used Reddit much without a 3rd party app, I also use it exclusively on mobile.
For me, the value of the site comes exclusively from the content, i.e. the community. And fortunately, that's something Reddit has no direct control over.
I realize, of course, that not everyone will be here now in 6 months instead of on Reddit, but it doesnt matter.
I think the majority of users are like me rather passive, but more important are the active users of the community.
It is much more important to have these pillars of the community on board, as they will sooner or later ensure that something new is created that will then attract the larger number of passive users.
And I think it's this usergroup that has angered Reddit for the most part. These are power users who probably all use 3rd party apps.
Nevertheless, many will of course stay, if you have put a lot of work and heart and soul into building up your community/subreddit for years, letting go is of course much harder than for someone like me.
Yep 10 years of rif for me. I found towards the end it was getting pretty stagnant. Its exciting to see something new growing in real time. All aboard the fediverse express.
I'm loving the fediverse. I have to thank Reddit to make me discovering it!
I am also using wefef and was an Apollo user. I have an overall positive experience with Lemmy+wefwef.
It feels buggy when scrolling and switching between panes (post, search, etc) but I can live with that since I know it’s a work in progress.
Like one of the top posts today (the meme with Patrick and his rock). “It’s ok Lemmy. You can go when you want.”
Is Lemmy.World a bit laggy for everyone else?
I wonder is it on my end or is it because of the new traffic it's getting?
Yeah its getting the hug of death right now.
Ive got a second account on another verse just so I can browse .world lol
Keep at it! I suspect these first few days will be the hardest. I uninstalled BaconReader last night and put "Connect for Lemmy" in its place on my home screen. So far it's been a pretty easy transition!
Yeah Lemmy seems the way forward. It just sucks for all the subs that won't be making it here anytime soon. Niche subs I'm following for example, I'll still have to rely on Reddit.
Honestly, I'm pretty excited about being a "pioneer" (sorry to those who have been here for longer). I never commented much on Reddit, but plan to contribute more here.
For some reason, wefwef was very buggy for me and kept throwing errors at me.
I use Memmy and I’ll probably stick with it!
It just had an update that fixed it, something to do with lemmy.world’s recent update.
As a new user, I'm finding it weird how everything seems so fragmented. Why join a [...subreddit] (what are they called here?) on one channel/server rather than another? Surely it just breaks up the user base and makes it harder to have everyone in one place.
Also, I find it weird how everything is on different servers from a user point of view - where do I make my account? I made mine on Lemmy.world, but what if I should be somewhere else?
The apps help slightly, but there's still confusion with local/all and seeing the server everything is hosted on.
I feel like it's a difficult sell to the more casual user and will make it much harder to have Lemmy as a true successor to Reddit.
There needs to be a way to obfuscate this information to a casual user and have an account in one place, with 'subreddits' in one place, so Lemmy is just Lemmy and you only learn more about the infrastructure if you want to.
Not trying to sound trite, but you’ll get used to it fast. I’ve been here since the day the protests started and haven’t been back to Reddit since. Watching this community grow by leaps and bounds over 3 weeks has been amazing and wonderful.
Don’t worry about which instance you’re on, it’s largely unimportant except in extreme cases (such as the nazi edge lord instance that just got defederated from the lemmy.world instance).
Spend a few minutes going through the communities list and subscribe to everything that interests you even a little bit. Bam, there’s your front page. Now sit back and enjoy higher quality discussions and content than that other place has had in a while. And it gets better every day.
You're not wrong, but as someone who has mostly adapted to the fediverse in the last 2 weeks after 15 years on Reddit, I remember a time when reddit was considered too complicated for the "casual" user. Lemmy is in its infancy right now and I think if one is the kind of person who is an early adopter, it will be very appealing to be in the first stages of the journey. I found my early years on Reddit to be much more rewarding and filled with joy than my later years because it felt more niche and close-knit in a way.
Also, subreddits are called communities here and you should join as many as are of interest! Just like a user could create multiple competing subreddits (looking at you /r/meirl, /r/me_irl, /r/2meirl4meirl), the good ones will take off and others may die off, or might just add additional content to the pool, which is a good thing.
Its been one day without Reddit
It's been one week since you looked at me, cocked your head to the side and said, "I'm angry."
Have you found an App for Lemmy that you prefer the most yet?
I'm using firefox on desktop and the UI looks awesome, no RES necessary.
One of the most impressive things to me: I've got ublock origin up and there are zero things being blocked! I'm so jaded of the years that I expect every website to have something blocked.
The internet seems fresh for a fleeting moment
I visited Reddit for 16 years. RIF on android then Slide on iOS. Slow to learn how Lemmy works.
Guess I shouldn’t be surprised the site’s burned. But it’s an adjustment - with how often I check my (now broken) app mindlessly, I actually think the scummy CEO did me a favor!
Wefwef as a web app is really really good. I’m also enjoying liftoff! App for iOS.
I'm enjoying Connect for Lemmy, however I need pointers on how to get more content for my lemmy front page.
Nice OP!
Same here, if anything this whole thing has done me a favour. Many times the past year i've considered giving up reddit. I tend to scroll reddit when I play with the dog after walkies, and the amount of time my brain says 'why you do this shit?' as I scroll past nothing, looking at comment chains of constant bickering. Why am I scrolling pasts hundreds of pointless comments, meandering bad takes, puns, the time wasted...for what gain? It was kinda an addiction I guess.
The first day has been great tbh, Memmy feels good despite the instance' slowness. The Hot filter is pretty good for catching newISH posts, or light comment posts which i've been tagging onto.
It really feels like old school forum days, and it's been really awesome to have my inbox popping off with replies. What's the point of lots of comments like a big reddit thread when no one replies or even sees your comment? Really looking back, it was just pissing in the wind.
Or if you did get a reply over on pigboycity, it would be some massive drangus trying to start a fight. Just ugh. I deleted my posts and account yesterday, now reddits just gonna be my suffix for google searches when I need something (until the fed starts getting indexed over the coming months/years).
I also really like the look here. old.reddit to me always looked shit from a UI standpoint (Despite being massively better than New, of course). lemmy.world just looks concise without being overwhelming. I'm excited to see growth and engage with real people again just like the old days.
Wefwef made all the difference. While I know it’s not Reddit the similarities in experience have made the move much easier.
Also amazing to see the beginning of all of these new communities!
I'm here on the fediverse via Jerboa. I agree it's definitely deterring me from using the official Reddit app!
Wefwef is incredible. I've never seen a web app that's even half as technically impressive, and it gets 2-3 major updates a day. Huge hats off to the devs.
