Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:

NASA blamed the rise mostly on the expansion of ocean water as it warms, a process known as thermal expansion. In recent years, approximately two-thirds of sea level rise resulted from land-based ice melt, while one-third was due to thermal expansion. However, in 2024, this trend reversed — thermal expansion accounted for two-thirds of the rise.

Shit they're going to get targeted with funding cuts due to this excellent research

If we delete all of this data and fire and muzzle the scientists, then the problem will go away.

I believe South Carolina has a law like this for coastal regions.

Because it impacted beach house sales.

I'm sure the insurance companies are woke and aware of this.

Better yet, let's hold a presidential press briefing and the stupid things that will be said will distract us for a month and make us forget about the slow collapse of our civilization

This Is taking too long dammit!

Oh no if only someone had warned us 30 years ago....

TIL NASA is woke.

(/s shouldn't be required but here we are...)

wow. an inch every four years about and the rate is still rising. So a foot in 48 years which might sound long but its no longer oh that is beyond my lifetime type of thing.

One main point is also: this is not a linear function. So ober 48 years you won't get 48 x 0.23". The rise accelerates as climate change accelerates.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 day ago

yeah and we are about half a foot as it stands so within 20 years should be there if not sooner. We already see so many effects were we are at now.

That's the rise, but imagine the increased rate of erosion. It will get above the rocks and start carving away at beaches and lakefront properties. Rich people's real estate investments are about to be devalued.

Rich people's real estate investments are about to be devalued.

Good. We can finally eat them then.

Personally I’d rather feed them to our cats…I’m veggie and they probably don’t taste nice.

Exponential functions are a bitch

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 day ago

And we are still on the gradual incline side of it too, not the steep part.

Mar-a-lago is 15 feet above sea level.

Edit: some of the grounds are at 4 feet.
