The problem with horny media is nearly always a quality problem, not a content problem.

Too many shows use fanservice as a crutch to boost up a painfully mediocre plot or character.

And as I grew older, I just find it distasteful. Also, not into children or children looking characters.

Seconded! I'd feel much better about fanservice in my anime if the characters were at least in their 20s.

Exactly. Kill la Kill is great not because it's horny, but because of everything else. Fanservice is just a candywrap. And when you have a candywrap without the actual candy (as with a lot of shows today), it fucking sucks.

There are tasteful ways to include fan service and the execution is what matters

Show is meant to be smutty ? It's about quality

Show not meant to be smutty ? this better be relevant to the plot in some way

If it's relevant to the plot, or a feature of the genre, is that even fan service? I thought fan service, by definition, was extraneous sexuality.

I'm curious, on a legit/fanservice spectrum, where would you place Kill La Kill? It shows tons of skin, but it's a legit part of the story. Of course it's a dumb premise, but they lean into it anyway, and it does drive the plot in several instances.

As an aside, I enjoyed it a lot because I absolutely love Studio Trigger and their art style, but I've stopped recommending it to anyone because the conversation always goes in one direction. I'm not surprised, of course, but I wish people had the ability to resist fixating on that one element and appreciate the cinematography, character development, music, voice acting (including Nobuyuki Hiyama!), and all the other things that make it great...

What a weird thing to post when you consider that most fan service is of underage children.

This is also a pretty big problem related to fan service. I want more grown up adult anime. If most of the Seinen Manga start getting good anime adaptation like Shonen. Then, we can fix that.

I'd like to see more adult anime mainly because I'm sick of dumbass teenage protags. Sure, seinen protags can be dumbasses too, but they're typically a little more mature on average.

I think that would require a revolution in Japanese culture first.

While I generally agree, I think it's always worth keeping in mind that sexualizing every female character all of the time can make women and fem-presenting people feel unwelcome in our communities. It's especially important to remember that when there's a decent-sized group of cis/het men who consider that part of the point of fanservice - just look at the gamergate crowd.

It doesn't have to be. It's just shit writing.

Can't remember where I read it. I think fan service is dumb as fuck. But what I read made sense at the time.

But most anime isn't trying to be the best anime ever. That's why there's so many isekai. There's so many anime clones out there. And they're trying to pay the bills.

Those panty shot scenes. Those summer swimsuit episodes. Those end up being toys and posters.

And if a thousand sweaty horny whales buy the 22-inch chibi-san to put in their man cave, that's money to make a season 2.

And while it's easy to laugh at these horny nerds, it really hit close to home when my wife, a person who admitted she HATES animated shows, bought a Delicious in Dungeon Senshi doll to recreate the famous fan service scene.

Wait, I don't remember there being fanservice in Dungeon Meshi, let alone with Senshi. When was this?

Idk, sounds like it feeds unrealistic expectations and worsens mental illness - but what do I know? I've only observed many weebs, and am friends with some.
