True but also let's be honest, sometimes it works great, but sometimes it doesn't work at all, and sometimes it works but took 100 times as much time and effort.

I def suffer from the “took 100 times more effort” camp. Yes I could have manually done this, but instead I wrote a script, crazy formulas in Excel, etc etc. It’s really just one part of my brain going “there has to be a better way than manually”, and my hyperfocus saying “hold my beer, it will take twice as long and no one will care about your methodology”.

You know, if you think about it, there are a ton of inventions that have been created as a means of that same process of experimentation with divergent thinking. Who knows what you could end up finding out :)

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 year ago

That's all a part of the process, and sometimes we learn something from it.

almost like we can learn what works for us by testing

Haha, scientific method, yeah
Something could work a thousand times and then just stop working because ???

And then, profit!

Maybe I'm born with it, maybe it's Maybelline.

The rule I've always followed is that if you're not willing to do the task instead then you dont get to criticize the methods.

Brb about to say this to my boss!

that's called forming a union

I can see what you mean, but I also think that it can be a bit limiting.

Sometimes you don't want to do it, yet you know something that can be of help.

I think it's more important to be respectful and not to expect suggestions to work like mandates. Or to work at all. Or to be right in the first place 😂

When I was growing up, my da never allowed me to listen to music while I studied or did my homework. He insisted only complete silence or else "you won't be able to focus and retain the information."

Guess who struggled and failed to turn in any completed homework? 😎

Guess who now can focus amazingly on work while listening to some kind of background noise? 😎

Oh the feels right here. I was blasting heavy metal while retaining my lessons. Don’t worry my mom still had other ways to make me feel like shit due to ADHD.

Also, when someone struggles to do something or solve a problem, and you have the solution. But that solution involves multiple steps that make no sense at first. Or you need to explain knowledge you have that they don’t and don’t see as relevant. They try everything else. Give up. You do your weird thing and done. ಠ_ಠ

It's not stupid if it works.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

There's a little ditty I like to sing to the tune of "if you're happy and you know it" that starts "if it's stupid and it works, it isn't dumb ..."

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

I started singing it and then got to the "if you're happy and you know it, and you really wanna show it" part, and now I can't finish it. 😭

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

...... If its stupid and it works, and you realy wanna show it, it isn't dumb🎶🎶

“If it’s stupid and it works, and nobody’s getting hurt, if it’s stupid and it works it isn’t dumb!”

There are plenty of examples of things that "just work" which are poorly implemented.

For example, my life. 😜

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Not always. I can take the riving knife off my table saw. It works just fine without it, but it's going to lead to kickback and a very bad day. I'd call removing it pretty stupid.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Nah, I know it's stupid, and it took way longer than the "normal" way, but it just works.

There's a fine line between the ego knowing you're right and the maturity to consider another option when you've already set your path.

"WHO IS CRAZY NOW!?"
