Ye Power Trippin' Bastards

1124 readers
66 users here now

This is a community in the spirit of "Am I The Asshole" where people can post their own bans from lemmy or reddit or whatever and get some feedback from others whether the ban was justified or not.

Sometimes one just wants to be able to challenge the arguments some mod made and this could be the place for that.

Posting Guidelines

All posts should follow this basic structure:

  1. Which mods/admins were being Power Tripping Bastards?
  2. What sanction did they impose (e.g. community ban, instance ban, removed comment)?
  3. Provide a screenshot of the relevant modlog entry (don’t de-obfuscate mod names).
  4. Provide a screenshot and explanation of the cause of the sanction (e.g. the post/comment that was removed, or got you banned).
  5. Explain why you think its unfair and how you would like the situation to be remedied.

Rules

Expect to receive feedback about your posts, they might even be negative.

Make sure you follow this instance's code of conduct. In other words we won't allow bellyaching about being sanctioned for hate speech or bigotry.

YTPB matrix channel: For real-time discussions about bastards or to appeal mod actions in YPTB itself.

Can't have anyone advocating for Subversion when Great Lord Linus has blessed us with Git.

[–] [email protected] 21 points 4 months ago (1 children)

you have been banned from c/linuxsucks for subversive advocation of foss.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 4 months ago

FOSS is fine, just as long as it's 250% faster, more feature rich, more stable, and more user-friendly than the proprietary alternatives.

[–] Scoopta 6 points 4 months ago

I was going to make a similar joke -_-

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 months ago

Excuse me, do you have a moment to talk about our Lord and Saviour Mercurial?

[–] [email protected] 19 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Oh yea, that guy is weird LMFAO. I can't tell if he's trolling half the time or if he's serious. Kinda leaning on serious lol

[–] [email protected] 29 points 4 months ago

He claims that FOSS is taking away jobs from "legitimate businesses" which is why he likes proprietary software better.

100% trolling

[–] [email protected] 7 points 4 months ago

He’s a Microsoft shareholder.

It's a shame, I think there's space for a community for gentle and good-natured roasting of Linux – no one has ever run a Linux OS without encountering some pain points (as with all software, to a greater or lesser extent) and shared frustration through comedy can actually be beneficial. It's definitely true that the Linux community can take itself too seriously sometimes.

That's not what this is, though, it's a furious, blinkered, irrational attack. Fuck that noise. More power to the users.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 months ago

Well shit. Thought that was what the sub was. Didn't read much, but it seemed that way on the surface.

The effect created by such Internet trolls is not very big, but they manage to make certain forums meaningless because people stop commenting on the articles when these trolls sit there and constantly create an aggressive, hostile atmosphere toward those whom they don’t like. The trolls react to certain news with torrents of mud and abuse. This makes it meaningless for a reasonable person to comment on anything there. Of course it's hard to separate people who are being cocks just because they're cocks, from someone who is being a cock for some particular purpose, and maybe it's not that useful to try to distinguish. Maybe this person really just revels in causing other people to get mad at them. But it is weird that they're working so hard on so transparently trying to make the experience on Lemmy worse, and it's also weird that LW is providing a safe space for them to do it in.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago

Lemmy.world has never been good about dealing with assholes and trolls for most of the time they've been around. It took them more than a year to ban @[email protected] permanently, and they never banned some of their more egregious trolls period, or they even unbanned them after being banned.

I think you fell prey to that dude's rouse... The whole point of the linuxsucks community is to stir up people and ban them. They're doing that all day, every day. madthumbs is a troll.

If you speak up or engage with the misinformation there, they got you and you're getting banned.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 4 months ago (2 children)

nah you don't get that committed to schizoposting for that long without sincerity i think

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I think there is quite a range, well into insanity if it's on the internet.

"subversion" would mean you're subverting the purpose of the community.

I got banned like 2 month's ago 😅

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago

like, I get how he's using it, but

one "subverts" a government, regime, dynasty or political organization. It suggests he sees himself as a king in a kingdom or something. his use of eg "pollution" and "poor morals" as ban justifications are also suggestive.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (2 children)

This person banned me too. I think the post was like Linus Torvalds explaining some of the shortcomings of linux... in 2010. I observed the simple fact that this video was almost 15 years old and that literally every single problem Linus identified at the time has either been completely solved or major progress has been made. I said that this was dishonest and tended to discredit his own position. He deleted my comment without acknowledgement and banned me for subversion.

This person is clearly not acting in good faith. This person is not making an onion: there's no farce or satire, and the nearest approach to humor seems to be the fact of the theme of the community. I don't get the impression they are laughing along with these would-be jokes. I looked into the community's post history, and it seems they were doing really well a while ago. I looked at those submissions and most were completely different: They were ironic, making light of linux' known definite shortcomings. Also, they were usually at least a little bit funny. I eventually found the subreddit of the same name which is intended to be ironic and funny and tongue-in-cheek apparently (and allows people of all opinions to participate). In other words, this person took the idea of a subreddit, stripped it of its context, irony, humor, and community interaction, and is confused why people don't upvote their content anymore.

On review of the community content, it seems that the majority of content posted recently is dishonest or misleading in some way. Unsurprisingly, this content seems to be original. On review of the modlog, it seems the majority of bans are for subversion.

I rule this person a confused Power Tripping Bastard.

I don't use this word often because I think it can have negative connotations I don't intend, but the English language doesn't have a better word I can think of right now. They are a fucking pussy. To clarify I meant that idiot mod.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 months ago

yea that tracks

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

Clear PTB.

Can you show some of the deleted comments. I'm just curious.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I don't know how to show them, but the post i made was admittedly critical of the community and his ideas.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)

If they removed them in the modlog, just take a screenshot of the modlog entries. If they didn't remove them, you can just link to them

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago

Doesn't show in the modlog, they used ban with content removal to avoid modlog entries.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

Maybe they meant semantic version?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 months ago

I made a post about c/[email protected] a while back, that person is basically a troll with nothing better to do. A lot of those posts are just him complaining about linux and many of them are insanely nonsensical.

Looking at the community now it seems he went off the deep end and locked the community and every other post so no one could criticize them anymore. Though that also means he won't be getting much engagement anymore.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

I got into a lengthy argument with this person before realizing they are a troll and blocked them.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 months ago

Oh yeah, that guy is dead serious, and he is a crank.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago

I am guessing they think it means "having the ability to reason"

Apache Subversion, often abbreviated as SVN, is an open-source version control system used by software developers to manage and track changes to files, such as source code and documentation. It was created in 2000 by CollabNet and is now maintained by the Apache Software Foundation.
