Welcome to c/WouldYouRather, where we present you with the toughest, most ridiculous choices you never knew you had to make! Would you rather have a third arm that's only useful for picking your nose, or be able to talk to animals but only if they're wearing hats? Yeah, it's that kind of vibe. Come for the absurdity, stay because you've clearly got nothing better to do with your life.

do something great for all of humanity but be remembered as one of the worst people who ever lived, or do nothing with any lasting impact in your lifetime and be remembered as a hero to all people?

Yes. I don't care how I'm remembered if it's possible to make life better for all people

The former. When you're dead you have no ego.

Before reading the other comments I thought I'd pick the first option, with it just being a misunderstanding/warped collective memory for some reason (and preferably only once I'm gone so people wouldn't be openly hostile while I'm still alive).

Now it's like, what if I did something terrible that's "just" beneficial to humanity as a species?

Like "I solved overpopulation..." (Hooray :D)

"...by deleting 90% of humans from existence." (... D: )

Exaggerated example, and questionable if it's really something to be called great when you think about all the problems coming with a sudden instantaneous drop in population, but you get the gist.
