I installed the app a while back to try and identify plants/animals, but I didn't know about the wider project around it

Data from iNaturalist and other organisations like observation.org is an important part in biodiversity research and conservation.

So while you get information about the wildlife you see, you help out scientists preventing one of the biggest problems of our planet: The biodiversity crisis.

Over on Wikipedia, we often use media from iNaturalist on Wikimedia Commons (provided an appropriate license) and then in turn on Wikipedia.

I'm a bird photography hobbyist and daily user of iNaturalist. I cannot overstate how great this site is. Everyone should check it out, its amazing to see what people are finding in your area.
