Or at least an IWD sequel in spirit: A game in the same engine as BG3, taking place in Forgotten Realms, but with a more linear main story and you create your entire party. Not that I dont enjoy having companion stories but I do also enjoy a simple dungeon crawler RPG.

Solasta is of course a good but less shiny alternative. I'm probably going back there when I tire of BG3.

First and foremost I want to see mods and expansions to BG3.

Ideally, we would have someone start developing a mod version of Icewind Dale, then maybe Larian could hire them on to make an official full game.

Yeah, if Larian adds mod tools and a multi-character editor, I imagine the community could make some really cool dungeon crawl campaigns.

I'd like to see another Planescape game or like something set on Krynn or Athas or in Wildspace. A Ravenloft game could be cool.

There's soooo much room to explore in the D&D universe, it's okay to go more than a few hundred miles from the Sword Coast. Not that I don't love the region.

A Dark Sun game where magic does destroy the environment would be awesome.

Honestly, Pillars of Eternity is probably that IWD spiritual sequel you're looking for, then there's Pillars 2 and also Tyranny is pretty great. All of which are made by some of the original devs of IWD. As for an updated sequel graphically, man idk, BG3 has raised the bar so high, and that's a good thing but it's gonna be a long time before that happens.

Tyranny is an amazing game. Too bad Obsidian Entertainment got sold to Microsoft.

Pillars 2 was great as well, it's a shame it wasn't as successful as Pillars 1.

Pillars 2 devolves into a really crappy boat simulator very quickly and it really turned me off of it. It's a shame because pillars 2 gameplay is so much better than pillars 1.

It’s sad reading the developers comments over Pillars 2 failure and how it killed the IP.

They just don’t get what they did wrong and to me it is really simple. No one wanted a fucking boat in a turn based RPG.

Here is my three picks I would love to see (in order):

  1. Spelljammer
  2. Planescape
  3. Icewind Dale

IWD was my jam back when I was a wee lad. I would buy IWD3 so fast, my wallet would burst into flame with the wind resistance from pulling it out so fast.

I will take this or Neverwinter Nights 3 with persistent server support.

This. But I'm afraid nobody will ever make a game like NWN again. "People hosting their own MMO-likes, and we dont get any money? No way!" Though Larian's engine has the tech needed. It isnt that a big leap for them to add a DM role, DM tools and increase player count.

Oh damn. That would be sick to use BG3 as replacement for Roll20 or the like.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I’d be shocked if wotc would allow that, they’re trying to make their own vtt

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I didn’t know they were making their own. Agreed though, it would just be really really… reallyreally… really cool to use BG3 as a tabletop engine.

I had this thought when I saw a "what should Larian do next" post. It makes total sense to me. They could do a stripped down, combat-focused Icewind Dale game, as sort of an equivalent to a "tactics" JRPG. Then, they could do a Planescape game that is all dialogue/RP focused with minimal combat. And then by that point, the BG3 engine would probably a bit out of date, so they could create a new engine and make a new Neverwinter nights game.

It makes total sense to me, but I was also 14 years old when BG1 was released and the phone lines at my house were too old to be able to play Everquest with my friends, so those old DnD CRPGs were basically my life in high school.

That said, Larian is not Black Isle and they can do whatever they want. I'd be just as excited by D:OS 3 as I would be by another nostalgia bomb like BG3. It's just fun to think about the possibilities.

+1 solasta (with UB mod). Honestly I miss it sometimes while playing BG3. Definitely going back for custom campaigns after BG3 is done.

I agree with everyone. I want to see more games from Larian or with this engine at something approaching this quality level. I don't particularly love 5e, but I do love Forgotten Realms and want more competent games in it.

IWD2 was pretty good. I would love an IWD3.
