I've noticed that any community I've subscribed to that's on a different server is showing on my list as "subscription pending". Everything seems to work though, I can still comment and post on these communities without a problem, so I'm not too concerned about that.

However I do have one other question about it. I've experienced difficulty finding communities that are not on this server, and been told its because no-one from this server has subscribed to it yet. But... if subscriptions to other servers' communities are always "pending", that means no-one from this server ever actually can properly subscribe to them. Does this mean that the difficulties will persist regardless? Or is a "pending" subscription sufficient?

sh.itjust.works appear to be running lemmy 0.17.4 still. 0.18-rc6 came out today, which seems to have resolved that issue for me.

Any other notable changes in 0.18-rc6?

Devs removed websockets, uses plain HTTP now as I understand it. Should help with subscriptions, and odd scrolling of old content appearing.

You seem to be misunderstanding something. In order to subscribe to a community, first someone on this server has to search for that community in the search box here. They merely have to search for it, they don't have to actually subscribe. After one person has done that, anyone on the server can follow links to the community and find it more easily.

However, anyone at any point can simply use the search box to "discover" a new community, provided they know the address.

The pending subscription is something I've heard about a lot and experienced sometimes, but it has had zero effect on my ability to use Lemmy. I just consider it joined already, its on my feed.

Al of my pending communities have still been showing up in my "subscribed" feed so I don't think it actually affects anything

Oh hello again. Large instances have been having issues with external subscriptions lately, likely because of the surge in traffic. lemmy.ml seems to have the issue solved by running the 0.18 release candidates. Maybe you can try unsubscribing communities at that instance and try subscribing again. At least this is my experience.
