From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

I like that Flatpak counts as a distro in this chart. I assume it's because the Steam flatpak does not really have access to distro information when the survey hits.

Also, the change between 2020 and 2024 for Arch and Ubuntu is wild. They switched places....

I was shocked by how small a share Debian has, until I realised this is specifically "distros for gaming"...

Yeah, my first question when I saw the title was "how do you even gather this data?". It's actually pretty cool as steam probably has rather reliable data in its own niche.

EndeavourOS is growing 👍 !!

What's more impressive is the sudden and massive Manjaro drop out! Something bad must have happend during 2020-2022.

I feel like Endeavour and Garuda should really be counted as Arch. For all intents and purposes they are Arch.

(I realize that this is simply whatever's in the Steam survey and the author didn't have a say in it.)
