The worst codebase I ever inherited like this was a Magento shop that had been heavily customized by a Czech programmer. All of the customizations had variables in Czech. The guy dropped off the grid after the handover.

I'm in this picture and I am okay with that.

I call it "mentorship". Not the part where I leave you with a pile of my crappy code. The part where I ask for more money, and I leave if I don't get it.

I see a lot of that going around my place of work lately. Sucks to see the knowledge pool get more shallow around here.

The bad news is the correction is often due to going out of business.

The whole two weeks notice thing is kind of dull, though.
