Falconry would be the worst midlife crisis because you have to be so serious about it. They don't fuckin play - you have to do a 2 year apprenticeship under a more experienced falconer before you can be on your own. You can't even get a bird until you've taken a test, built facilities, bought all the equipment, and passed an inspection. You can't be like, "hold up, I'll be back in a few years with a falcon and then I'm starting a cult, just be patient." That's not a crisis, that's going to bird college.

(Full disclosure, everything I know about falconry came from a Winter Soldier fanfic, but I just looked and it's all true. And very intense.)

I'm a falconer, this is true for the US. But you are able to have a bird as an apprentice. But ya, the quickest I've seen someone go from nothing to bird was like 10 months. In some countries like the UK you can just go buy a bird. I would not recommend it but it is legal.

Oh that seems like a terrible idea for a lot of reasons, not least of which is that there's no way people haven't abandoned birds after realizing they were in way over their heads. Wtf, UK?

You're right. I know because all of that is what a falconer told the audience at the renn faire last year.
