He was born in like the 30s or something?

It isn't a contemporary piece, but it is absolutely a fascinating look into what some crazy man who loves wolves in the '50s is like.

He was pretty well known at the time, Hunter Thompson like notoriety as a journalist with slightly less cultural fear because he was more laid back and sociable than Thompson.
