I actually live in an area where a round trip of ~650km (400 miles) every 3 months is cheaper than buying from the local chain stores.
The upcharge on my dog food alone pays for my gas ($80CAD/BAG vs $100+shipping), and the distance is why I chose a PHEV over a full electric. If I had believed Musk and gotten a top end cyber truck with its "500 mile" range, I would have gotten stranded trying to buy groceries.
And before anyone comments on the price I pay for dog food; it's literally the only dry food I have found that doesn't upset her stomach, and even all the raw food brands I have tried upset her stomach occasionally.
I've got some family out in Rural Washington State. I can believe it if you live somewhere like where my uncle lives. I only know one person in my entire social network / family / etc. etc. who lives in such a rural area though, so its pretty rare indeed. But a lot of Canadian areas are like Rural Washington State IIRC.
Grew up in Douglas county. Remember the looks we'd get buying 10 gallons of milk.
I do not believe you
The closest Walmart is a similar distance in the other direction.
The "wholesale" here bulk buys from Costco and adds $1-10 to the price tags depending on the item. At $80 per tank of gas, it's very easy to justify the trip.
Damn, Canada be wide
Oh you have several grocery stores nearby, you just wanna go to costco
Now you are just being obtuse.
As I mentioned earlier, driving that far for groceries and supplies in general - not just Costco, but the pet store, import store, hardware store, etc is comparatively cheap enough to justify the drive.
Again, my dog food alone pays for the gas unfortunately.
