So in the days where every army was using black powder rifles, was everyone just boiling down gigantic amounts of shit all the time?

Yep, a really big source was bat guano from caves. But, I have also heard that the dirt from old outhouses.

Here are a couple of videos. One about human and one about chicken poop.

But for real you want old composted poop. Not fresh stinky poop.
