Honestly, Reddit could have bought Apollo and then done absolutely nothing different and this would have gone over much better.

Yeah but then they would have to justify killing all other 3rd party apps.

When they first pitched it I feel like there was no way in hell they'd buy it, the dev even said in the call he was mostly joking. The irony to me is that if they didn't lie about the dev threatening them then that call never would've leaked. Things wouldn't be nearly as bad. Then maybe they even would've considered it to try and smooth everything over. No way they're doing that now after getting caught in their lie though.
