Yeah, thats not how consumers think at all. The consumer gets presented with a default search provider (google) so they will use that. They don't care about other ways of searching for information, porn, or drama.
Also I don't think that Google Search is a quality product anymore. Too often do I find Ads in between the results which also are of low quality (some pages are utterly domineering like reddit or fandom wikis).
Google is a shell of its former glory.
I won't cry if they get trust busted. Death by enshitifacation, imo.
Amazon should be next, they're fucking worse. If your search Amazon, the same keywords, thru different means you get different results.
Type in "5w30 5L" in the app =set1 Do the same in Firefox = set2. Type in sort by price low to high and watch 80% of the results disappear. What the actual fuck.
Reddit is the same way now too. Go there in Firefox. Ok, titties in my face, everytime, first thing. Switch to desktop mode, oh look at that, back to normal.
Everything enshitified.
I now go as long as possible without spending a dime, out of spite for the whole fucking system. Anti-consumer. Buying used if I buy at all.
How old are you?
Because that's exactly how Google search rose to dominance.
Yahoo, Altavista, Ask Jeeves and Savvy Search all sucked compared to Google.
It was word of mouth that shot them to the top, the behavior you described didn't start until like 10 or 15 years later.
Google was also simple and fast.
All the others had pictures, tried to look fancy, the landing page had news and all sorts.
Google had a text box and 2 buttons. The results were plain text, no junk. And it was fast, and decent. It was absolutely perfect for the early days of slow computers and even slower internet
Old enough to have witnessed the raise of Google Search while I was still searching with lycos. I mean, yeah Google Search was pretty amazing back then but its not anymore.
Just my assumption, not a fact: I think even if consumers were prompted to choose a search engine and Google was on the bottom of the list, the majority would pick Google. Obviously that too is a sign of Google's dominance.
And while many people seem to get more and more frustrated with the Google search engine, the competition is either not better, Bing or uses Google/Bing in the back.
