I don't understand real estate.

I was looking online for fun and saw this house. https://www.realestate.com.au/property-house-tas-forth-141066708

I love how positively haunted it is with the attic and what not. Would be a fun fixer-upper. But it's a dump. It's not liveable. It needs a lot of work. It's not on a lot of land. It's not near anything major in Tasmania (like Hobart or Launceston). The only "benefit" is how old it is.

"Accepting offers over 550k"

I truly don't get how.

Whaddya mean ? It’s right near the bustling metropolis of Devo. Jewel of the North.!

Seriously that’s a decent size plot tho. The house doesn’t look too bad and would really shine with a bit of love. I don’t know the comps to really judge tho.

I would love to have the $$ to buy something like that, renovate the shit out of it and live away from people.

Having said that, probably looking at like 200k in renovations (most likely more). The 550 seems low too considering what properties are going for these days.

So basically about a million to live in bumblefuck.

There is a massive lack of supply of housing in Australia. Very little is government built (unlike the 60s and 70s when govs were pumping cash in building homes), and developers are squeezing all they can out of buyers. Limited quantity of builders as well, so older and established 'gems' are fetching a pretty price.

Shit's fucked

All I want in this life is a balcony to sip my coffee on of a morning and look out at some mountains and trees.

I'd settle for not having daily power tool noises at this stage.

Mountains would be nice though

I'm with you. The potential is there for something really beautiful. Though my opinion might change if the structure is as dire as it possibly could be.

A building/structural inspector would be the first step before even considering it. Could be sturdy with minor structural works neede

I understand the potential but paying for potential just seems...crazy. It's like "give me heaps of money so you can spend more money on the potential."

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Because it is crazy. Crazy and unsustainable. To spend nearly seven figures for a home in rural Tassie is bonkers.
