Hello,

we will be performing the long awaited update to Lemmy 0.19.9 tomorrow.

We are planning for around 1 hour of downtime between 16:00-17:00 UTC on 16th of March.

You can convert this to your local time here: https://inmytime.zone/?iso=2025-03-16T16%3A00%3A00.000Z

You can find an overview of the changes in our previous announcement here and in the Lemmy release notes:

Update 16:50 UTC:

The upgrade was successfully completed at around 16:27 UTC, but we're still fighting with some performance issues after the upgrade. Our database and the outbound federation container are currently using significantly higher CPU than expected, which is still being investigated to identify the root cause.

This is the update that'll break sync, right?

Sad times, but I guess I'm gonna be deciding between boost and infinity tomorrow

[–] [email protected] 42 points 1 day ago (2 children)

No it won't. That's the next major release, this is just LW catching up.

[–] [email protected] 30 points 1 day ago (1 children)

partial breakage, the stuff that people on other instances have already been experiencing for a while.

iirc there are still some additional issues with sync arising with the update, but it won't be entirely broken.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm a sync user and haven't had any issues, what breakage are you referring to?

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 day ago (2 children)

there are various mentioned in [email protected], the main one i was referring to was the one where in some cases posts in local communities won't show comments.

Biggest problem for me is that posts no longer show as read. Makes it almost completely unusable. I switched to Voyager and canceled my premium Sync subscription.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago

Well damn. The comments for me are not so rarely even more important/interesting than the post itself...

For me Sync has been broken since long ago (proud Summit user now), my instance has always been updated faster than .world though, so I can't really pinpoint since which version I started having issues with it.

+1 for Voyager. It feels like a spiritual successor to Apollo.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 day ago

Voyager makes me feel right at home as a former Apollo and RiF user.

I used sync for reddit for years, but I kinda hope sync dies. But I also have an axe to grind with the dev after they invalidated the app purchases and made people buy it again to not have ads. Plus their inability to update on a regular basis is kinda terrible, and has continued. One of the top posts on the sync community when I checked was to not report PMs because it will actually report a random comment with the same ID, which is just a massive fuck up given the amount of spam PMs.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

they invalidated the app purchases and made people buy it again to not have ads.

Exactly. Not even a discount. I think it was even more expensive than the reddit version.

I just checked. It's $20 to remove ads. Wow.
I also checked to see how much it cost for the reddit version. I paid $4 to remove ads and $5 for the "pro" version. That's more than I've paid for any app. Now they want another $20 to remove ads on an app they neglect and ignore their customers? Disgusting.

Plus their inability to update on a regular basis is kinda terrible, and has continued.

Not just continued, but has gotten worse. Additionally, it's even more important to update more frequently because of the more frequent changes. It was also never fully functional for Lemmy. For example, spoilers have never worked.

To add to all that, they don't even have the decency to pop in for a quick comment or two just to help people feel better.

Wow that's a lot of salt for someone trying to value their work higher. Maybe just use a different app? Ironically I was a pro user on Reddit and have never been forced to upgrade on Lemmy as it has never shown me a single ad despite the fact that I would in heartbeat Β―\_(ツ)_/Β― , I have never had issues with any Sync app and I've been a user since...I dunno 2013?

I do agree that JDLawson has become more reclusive but he was never all that interactive with the community to be honest. I don't see that updates or stability of the app has really been an issue. Any time I have had problems they have always been native to Lemmy.

Wow that's a lot of salt for someone who just wants to express their frustration. Maybe go to another thread?

But I also have an axe to grind with the dev after they invalidated the app purchases and made people buy it again to not have ads.

Is that even legal?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago

I mean, it was technically a different app, so I guess yes

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Former Sync user of around 5 years. Recently switched to summit and it was a pretty easy transition. I've made plenty of rants about how the Dev just abandons paying customers and I finally had enough once I knew that it actually messes things up if you try to report some things.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I can't make any other app look and feel as nice as Sync, honestly. I was trying out Thunder just now, and maybe I could get used to it but the user avatars don't work for some reason. I don't disagree about ljdawson though and I wish it was different.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

I'm trying out Thunder and like it for the most part, but I can't seem to get messages to work

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

Try Summit, it’s slick!

Yeah, yet another proprietary app is really the place to go.

Thunder works great, it FOSS, and under active development.

BOOST BOOST BOOST

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago

Summit is my main app for Lemmy.

Accidentally replied to the wrong comment. Moved.

Finally the people that got baited into adware like sync will be forced to find something better.
