How the hell did he get the Hispanic vote anyway? I've never quite understood that.

A lot of legal immigrants hate illegal immigration. They worked hard to do things the right way and don't like people trying to cheat the system. Democrats took way too long and let it get way too out of control before taking illegal immigration seriously.
They often also hate legal immigrants who came after them
In South Texas you should see how the "established" Hispanic community treats the "new arrivals". It's horrific. I have been told the folks who can trace their family back three or four generations don't see themselves as Hispanic at this point. Joke's on them, they're still "Mexican" to Trump.
Most legal immigrants in the us skew right wing and tend to hate immigrants of all kinds, believing themselves to be the only ones worthy of immigrating and believing only their struggles matter.
After all you tend to immigrate to countries you share values with if it's your choice; it's only natural the worst of the worst legally immigrate to the US. From doctors that only care about money instead of patients to former slave owners fleeing prosecution for their crimes against humanity.
I know a few illegal immigrants (now lega) that hate illegal immigrants. You get the "oh times were different" story when confronted.

Because many Hispanics are Catholic, many are very conservative, and most of them hate the cartels. The Democrats took them for granted when they haven't maintained their relationship with Hispanics for decades.
Dems have abandoned all Southern states for decades now.
