Frieren is so good at so many levels it's insane.
Even before anime it was already regarded as an absolutely amazing story. For me it just hits perfectly with the melancholy and the concept of passage of time but it also has well made fight scenes.
The anime adaptation is insane because a certain talented director saw that and thought: I must assemble all the geniuses in the industry and create a masterpiece of adaptation. And that madlad did it.
Frieren is a perfect example of how adaptations should be made. It takes a concept and expands on it in a way that makes sense only in anime form.
For example the Fern and Stark dance scene was so detailed and beautifully animated yet in manga it was a few panels. Same with some fight scenes. From one panel to an absolutely stunning sequence.
I'm not even going to talk about attention to details and music.
I watched the show and was impressed, then I watched YouTube videos analyzing the show and was stunned how many details I missed.
Yeah it really deserves no. 1 spot on anime rankings.
Btw if you enjoyed Frieren we have a community at [email protected], feel free to stop by!
I've read the manga after watching the show and it was quite amazing that how every scene was there. Nothing was left out .... instead the fight scenes, rare as they are were dragged from a couple of pages to 10 minutes of action with an amazing soundtrack (as OP said). It's better in the anime, I'd say. But what do I know :D
Hey, Frieren has been sitting on my to-watch list for awhile, but despite the name of that list, whenever I pick something off of it I actually tend to look for a manga first.
How would you say the anime and manga compare?
I have been reading the Frieren manga since way before the anime was announced, and I think that both the anime and manga are excellent. The anime adaptation really helps elevate the manga source in several ways (OST, voice talent, gorgeous background art, extended and improved action sequences).
For a different perspective, I watched Frieren together with my wife (who had not read the manga). She enjoyed it so much that afterwards, she read the manga from the beginning and got caught up. When I asked her, she said that she felt that watching the anime and then continuing the manga from where the anime ended would have been fine.
