I want a free app to practice and memorize vocabulary but one that also teaches grammar and audio comprehension (I can barely understand sometimes, especially since I don't use Duolingo every day) better than Duolingo does and doesn't make you lose hearts or anything.

they're still aren't many very good alternatives. I like busuu but less popular languages are not comprehensive, so it depends on what you're learning.

I also like drops but you can only study for 3 minutes at a time three times a day unless you pay.

that said, duo is complete trash now, so I still used busuu and drops rather than Duolingo while I was in India.

I also think a lot of language-specific apps are good, so if you're studying a particular language, just search for learning Chinese or learning Spanish rather than "Duolingo alternative" or "language learning app".

you'll get a lot of good vocabulary and grammar and you can study without those idiotic hearts.
