Its a suprise to me that there were even people doing that.
It's extremely common on intersex infants. Gotta remember that most people barely know intersex people exist. And the doctors will tell the parents there's "something wrong", the parents want to have a "normal kid" and are told the kid won't know, and here we are.
Or if its anything like circumcision, they just do it without saying because its "the default".
