Protesters have delayed the reopening of a Woolworths distribution centre after almost two weeks of strikes over better pay and conditions.

Woolworths had planned to reopen its critical Dandenong South distribution centre in Melbourne’s south-east on Monday at 6am to address the problem of empty shelves in its stores across Victoria, and in some NSW and ACT stores.

The supermarket giant had expected the majority of its usual workers to return to the centre, after more than 1500 staff went on an indefinite strike at four sites beginning November 21.

However, a picket line of hundreds of protesters on Monday – mostly from the United Workers Union, but also from the Victorian Socialists group – gathered and continued to block entrances to the centre.

Woolworths exists? Does anyone know whether this is the same company that used to be a department store in the US?

I don't think they're related.
