Legend has it he practiced on Mt Cook, which is NZ highest mountain.

He used places in NZ which replicated different parts of the Everest climb. Same angle, rocks, distance, fissures, etc etc So he was only practicing like 20 metres at a time, just a very specific 20 m. That's so clever. ( I did read half the book ... lol )
