Why do (presumeably) Americans always speak of 9 to 5? Is that the norm there? I work at construction and we work from 7 to 3:30

When I did construction it was 630 - 1930

9 to 5 is like office hours.

Im not American and I thought i have a 9-5 Job meant i have a normal job
