But then why does it sound so different if I take my thumb out of the motion and just slap the same spot with my finger?
Your thumb provides the resistance necessary for your finger to hit at the speed that it does.
Your muscles ram up in strength over time. By pushing against your thumb, your finger muscle has built up the strength to push your finger at the higher speed needed.
