Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must be legitimate questions. All post titles must include a question.

All posts must be legitimate questions, and all post titles must include a question. Questions that are joke or trolling questions, memes, song lyrics as title, etc. are not allowed here. See Rule 6 for all exceptions.

Rule 2- Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Questions which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts and joke questions.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-question posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

On fridays, you are allowed to post meme and troll questions, on the condition that it's in text format only, and conforms with our other rules. These posts MUST include the [NSQ Friday] tag in their title.

If you post a serious question on friday and are looking only for legitimate answers, then please include the [Serious] tag on your post. Irrelevant replies will then be removed by moderators.

Rule 7- You can't intentionally annoy, mock, or harass other members.

If you intentionally annoy, mock, harass, or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here.

  1. Create your matrix account! You can just use your Google account if it's easiest for you.
  2. Go on fluffy chat! Just use the link provided. Or, for all using Jerboa, there's an app on the App Store and I think Google Play
  3. Put in the invite link! We can discuss ideas, and general dialogue. Expect something sort of like a subreddit's discord server. See you there!

I think a little clarification is needed. No. I don't actually think everyone there is insane. I don't care about the bans so stop trying to use that. HB enthusiasts coming here and trying to call me out achieves nothing besides proving my point

Was talking about this with my partner while on a hike, they think they couldn't take ni more than 8 While I said I thought i could take at least 30. No weapons, just you and the squirrels.

I know it’s used toward Trumpist politicians so far. Was the context such that “weirdo” was the only sensible choice?

I feel troubled by this because Keep Austin Weird, Keep Portland Weird, etc., which is normally celebrated. And I’m weird.

So I understand that the subnet mask provides information about the length of the routing prefix (NID). It can be applied to a given IP address to extract the most significant bits allocated for the routing prefix and "zero out" the host identifier.

But why do we need the bitwise AND for that, specifically? I understand the idea, but would it not be easier to only parse the IP address ~~string~~ sequence of bits only for the first n bits and then disregard the remainder (the host identifier)? Because the information necessary for that is already available from the subnet mask WITHOUT the bitwise AND, e.g., with 255.255.255.0 or 1111 1111.1111 1111.1111 1111.0000 0000, you count the amount of 1s, which in this case is 24 and corresponds to that appendix in the CIDR notation. At this point, you already know that you only need to consider those first 24 bits from the IP address, making the subsequent bitwise AND redundant.

In the case of 192.168.2.150/24, for example, with subnet mask 255.255.255.0, you would get 192.168.2.0 (1100 0000.1010 1000.0000 0010.0000 0000) as the routing prefix or network identifier when represented as the first address of the network, however, the last eight bits are redundant, making the NID effectively only 192.168.2.

Now let's imagine an example where we create two subnets for the 192.168.2.0 network by taking one bit from the host identifier and appending it to the routing prefix. The corresponding subnet mask for these two subnets is 255.255.255.128, as we now have 25 bits making up the NID and 7 bits constituting the HID. So host A from subnet 192.168.2.5/25 (HID 5, final octet 0000 0101) now wants to send a request to 192.168.2.133/25 (HID 5, final octet 1000 0101). In order to identify the network to route to, the router needs the NID for the destination, and it gets that by either discarding the 7 least significant bits or by zeroing them out with a bitwise AND operation. Now, my point is, for identifying the network of which the destination host is part of (in this case, the host is B), the bitwise AND is redundant, is it not?

So why doesn't the router just store the NID with only the bits that are strictly required? Is it because the routing table entries are always of a fixed size of 32 bits for IPv4? Or is it because the bitwise AND operation is more efficiently computable?

I can either book a direct 3 hour flight or take a 36 hour bus trip across 1K miles changing buses 2 times in 2 different non English speaking countries but in big cities, so I assume young people and public facing employees at the bus exchanges to speak some of it...

I'd have to wait between 3 and 5 hours to board the next bus. Optimist me says great! I could go sightseeing, but with a large and heavy backpack this might not be a good idea...

Then there's food, which at bus stations or in tourists areas is neither good nor cheap no matter where you are, personal hygiene, pickpocketing... I'd be traveling solo.

And more noob questions: are travelers allowed to eat in the bus? Am I allowed to bring my own food?

I've read the post again and this looks like a really stupid idea... but did you ever do something like this? Any regrets?

I'm looking to buy a Pixel 7 Pro and found a local shop offering two options: brand new and "brand new, soft-unlocked." I was told the soft-unlocked version is carrier-unlocked (likely from US carriers like Verizon) and will remain unlocked unless I factory reset it. If I do reset it, they said it’s a quick 5-minute fix to unlock again.

The price difference between the two is about $60. Does what they’re saying make sense, or should I be concerned about potential issues down the road?

I remember when I was a kid, doctors were so interactive and really took time to get to know you and talk to you, learn about what you're going through and explain things. Now as an adult, it's been nearly impossible to find a doctor who is willing to take any amount of time to sit down, explain things, show any sort of compassion or empathy at all.

I suffer from acid reflux, and in order to diagnose that, they basically put a tube down your throat, it's called an endoscopy. You have to be fully sedated with anesthesia and take nearly an entire day off of work because the way the anesthesia affects you, you can't drive and someone has to drive you. Well for many years now we've had this other procedure which is a tube, but they put it through your nose instead. There's been lots of research papers about the use of it, it's used in other countries as a procedure regularly. So I asked several gastroenterologists if they offer the procedure and every single one of them said no, and would not provide any additional information or insight as to why you have to be completely sedated and pay thousands upon thousands of dollars for expensive anesthesia. I am simply blown away. It makes no sense. A research tested method that has been written about for about a decade now in actual research studies by board certified medical physicians, and no one offers it. Literally no one, and they won't even consider it.

I've also been through at least several primary care physicians because the ones I have seen are so short and don't really take time to get to know you at all. They just pop in, ask you a handful of questions and leave, if your test results come back with anything abnormal, they say it's nothing to worry about, they don't want to take any extra time to help look into anything or diagnose you.. like wtf?

It just seems like doctors these days are out to get you to spend as much money as possible and do the absolute bare minimum for you in return. And now we have direct primary care options where you can circumvent insurance entirely, pay your doctor thousands upon thousands of dollars a year for the same level of care that we had in the '90s. But now you have to pay out of pocket for that in addition to your insurance. Wtfffff

Just a random question that popped into my head while correcting a message I sent to a friend.

While ordering a crew cut is easy, since it's on the menu, what about other kinds?

Can you just go "I'd like a men/women's haircut" and leave it at that, or do you need something more specific, like saying you want a Charlestone done by a No. 3 to the sides, and a 4 up top?

Is it good employer strategy to pay my employees just enough so that they can't save money, so that they can never walk away from the job?

Like, there is a threshold where if they are able to save X per month, they will eventually use that against you and quit at an inopportune time?

And if that threshold falls below state mandated minimum wage, what steps can be taken to mitigate this?

I previously made a now-deleted post somewhat related to this topic ~~in the wrong community SHHHHHH~~. This is more broad.

Barring friends of friends, I have not made a new friend ever outside of school. As someone with a really niche personality, it's hard to be brave enough to approach new people--nobody's as weird as I am. I actually used to have a friend group that fit my personality, but it dissolved due to more drama than I can even comprehend. That's why I'm in this situation, was all of that.

I've chosen not to go to college. That'd be my best outlet for meeting new people, but I simply don't want to deal with debt. So, my time to meet as many people as possible has been cut somewhat short.

There's a saving grace, though. I'm a furry--this is the niche personality part. Cons would be great, but, to keep it short, I just don't have that capability right now. I'm not even IT yet, but my fate is sealed.

In the meantime.. I am very bored. Thanks for reading.

For those that aren't familiar, Spirit Halloween is a store that pops up in vacant stores around the middle of August and remain until early November. They sell Halloween things like costumes, decorations, etc. I wonder why there isn't a Christmas version that could sell Christmas stuff that could pop up after Spirit leaves and remains until January. There's plenty of Christmas decorations, tree, etc that are sold each year, feels like it would be something that could work.

Why doesn't this exist?

Take dried beans, roast 'em, grind 'em, and brew some bean juice?

I have no idea if it would taste good or not, but we don't know if we don't try.

Edit: I need to see what dried beans I have and maybe go shopping. I will give this a try with a couple different types of beans and report back if I fart or not.

@nostupidquestions Can't you log in to Jerboa using a Mastodon account and log in using a Mastodon app like Moshidon to log in to lemmy? How would that work?

The fedi community and app remains confusing to me. I don't know if they're separate federated communities or linked ones and if it's linked if they are seamless. I don't know how many levels of complexity I haven't even considered. Maybe you can only log in through Jerboa sometimes because I can't with my account.

I've seen videos on it from leading YouTubers. They do a good job at covering the maneuverability of it, but they don't explain enough of the electronics to satisfy my appetite. I understand that it's is great at electronic warfare due to advanced processing power from advanced chips. What are they doing with all that electronic power, running an LLM chat bot to deceive the enemy in their own language and ray tracing graphics on the helmet HUD?

I've tried several types of artificial intelligence including Gemini, Microsoft co-pilot, chat GPT. A lot of the times I ask them questions and they get everything wrong. If artificial intelligence doesn't work why are they trying to make us all use it?

The reason this outlet is open was because my washing machine was connected directly to it. I was advised to close it up by the people who took my old washing machine away. However i dont think i can wait until my friend has time to look at this. I likely cant turn the power on on the outlet at all right now i assume, how can i make sure myself that i can safely turn the power back on? electricity varies wildly in countries, im from austria if that helps.

Edit: a friend of mine who does some electrician work as part of his job (building pools) corroborated several of your comments (the only exposed cable is the grounding one and he offered to cover it up further at a later point after i put some tape on it)

thank you all for your answers and putting me at ease

I assume it has something to do with the sound cancelling. It uses white noise or something, right? I'm running out of nails to test this.

Say my deductible is 1500 and I need a procedure that’s costs $1000 but my insurance will cover 50% before deductible. A few months before the procedure I managed to meet my deductible though does that mean they will cover 100% of it or the 50% still?

If possible try to explain like I’m five
