Before I left Reddit, I used a plugin through the api to replace all of my comments with random gibberish and then delete them. Part of this was because (mandatory) fuck spez. But more importantly, it was to protect the anonymity of my account. After years of posting, there is likely enough personal information shared to potentially connect my Reddit habits to my online identity. I wasn't planning on using Reddit again in the future on that account, but I left it open in order to maintain some security control over the account. I'm not really sure what to do at this point because I still consider it a security vector that's a bit concerning. There's no way I can manually edit and delete all of my content with the snail's-pace reddit UI, and I have no ability to assure that my content will remain unavailable or at least not publicly displayed.

And only sometimes.

Before people start asking in the comments, the website is a niche fashion archive.

The most useless calendar widget is made by Apple. I constantly forget that someone’s birthday or something important is coming up later in the week.

Now I understand that you can set up alerts and you can set up reminders for stuff. I also understand that you can choose a different size widget. But depending on the size and the amount of events it’s possible it won’t even show you what’s going on the next day in the larger widget as well.

This is forced me to use third-party widgets to display calendar events for the week on my home screen. I hate it because I have no idea if it’s stealing my data.

Bonus Edit! The large widget fails to show you what’s happening today!

There is no reason to require this setting for users who aren’t posting live videos.

Believe I also turned off all "promo" emails and communications of any sort in the settings while i did have linkedin... thinking about just straight up deleting it now instead of leaving the profile deactivated.

Yeah, for some reason, after the newest UI update, changing the volume from another device is broken... AGAIN. Good thing I use spotify like that only 90% of the time.

I sure do love using services I pay for...

That's a rhetorical question, in case there's any doubt. I know the exact what and why of their bullshit.

As a general rule of thumb, I don't set it for the regular 15 minute increments, because it probably won't go off. Today, I set it for 10:37 and it went off at 10:46! 😠

I got a new printer. Auto-discovered, added, and prints fine from Windows in 2 minutes. Auto discovered, added, and prints fine from OSX in 30 seconds. Auto-discovered and added on Linux, but trying to print results in "printer is unreachable at this time" - even after 50 re-installs, different configs, different drivers, different protocols.

I recognized that some computers were on different subnets, but couldn't figure out a pattern. It turns out that the printer has a setting called "Restricted Server List" and the default setting is null. Here's its description in the admin interface: "Comma-delimited list of IP addresses that are allowed to make TCP connections. Example: 157.184.0.0/24. where 0 is a wildcard and /24 is the network prefix."

It also has a setting called "Restricted Server List Options", set to block all ports by default. Here's its description: "By default, addresses not in the restricted server list will have all access blocked. When Block Printing Only is selected, addresses not in the restricted sever list will be blocked from printing only. When Block Printing and HTTP Only is selected, addresses not in the restricted server list will be blocked from printing and HTTP. "

Admin interface doesn't say this anywhere, but the default setting of no restricted servers apparently allows access from other networks, but not from the same network as the printer. I set the restricted servers to "192.168.132.0/24" and then I could access the printer admin web page and print to the printer from my Linux box, but not from any of the computers that were working before. So I set it to "192.168.0.0/16" and every computer on all subnets in my house can print and access the printer admin.

The default setting of no restricted servers was extremely non-intuitive in that it actually only restricted servers on the same subnet. And there was no such documentation.

What a crappy waste of 7 frickin' hours!

Every day, we work to make our platform the best it can be, which includes regularly revisiting our terms and policies (also known as our House Rules) to make sure they meet the needs of our growing community and allow us to continue to support you. Today, we’re sharing a few updates that go into effect on September 15, 2024.

We’ve made some changes to our dispute resolution clause (section 11) for users in North and South America, with updates to our arbitration procedures for smaller matters and for coordinated or “mass” arbitrations (with 25 or more claimants). We have also updated the choice of law that’s applicable to the Terms. As before, the arbitration agreement includes a class action and jury waiver, which means we’ll be resolving most disputes in private, individual arbitration, and not in court. Please read this section carefully. We’ve added which entity acts as the merchant of record, depending on a buyer’s currency and location of your payment instrument.

So, if you're upset at all you can't sue, you can't go to the courts, you have to sit in a an arbitration with someone we choose who (trust us) won't be biased.

To add in, an annoyance for sure:

Effective July 29, our Adult Nudity and Sexual Content Policy introduces more rigorous guidelines regarding our prohibitions of nude or sexual content, as well as how to appropriately list certain mature content.

Edit:

The poll stopped me in my tracks but it's actually even worse.

It should not take this long to get to imdb

Edit2: didn't even realize it thinks I'll "love it" based on things I look up. I don't think I'd like it.

Edit³: IMDb was the example I used without thinking. I'm aware that there's a link to it in the top card. It's the other web results that I don't already know about that I'd like to see. I now know there's a hidden "web" tab. There's also https://www.google.com/search?udm=14&q=example` but it's still mildly infuriating that you have to know about these things to get the basic results we expected for years.

No, it's not phishing, it's legit, the header match with google and the link goes to https://accounts.google.com/AccountChooser/signinchooser?continue=https%3A%2F%2Fadmin.google.com%2Fac%2Fac%2Falert%2Fdetails%3FalertId%3D3...

Why not just write the message there instead of letting me login to watch the important notification?????????????????

When I want something cheap, I usually hit Aliexpress (website). As I was looking at the Aliexpress app page on the Google Play Store to check its privacy details, TEMU came up as a recommended app.

Now, my wife has used TEMU in the past, but since she often can't find her way around things, I downplayed her negative experience as "user error". That said, I went to the TEMU website and started looking around.

I found something that was a reasonable price, but then get this message saying I could get this item free through the app... sigh. OK. I sign up with my usual fake/random credentials and add this "free" item to my cart.

A spinning prize wheel comes up. Hey, I can get THREE free items now! Sweet. I spend the next 3 hours looking for stuff I can actually use, doom-scrolling through everything from women's underwear to t-shirts with assault rifle print. Literally something for everyone. LOL

Then I select my third "free" item, and another spinning prize wheel comes up. "100% off the next $35". Ok.

I didn't need more stuff, but hey, 100% off sounds like more free stuff!

I spend another hour looking, keeping an eye on the amount "saved" (apparently $600+, for stuff that is sold on Aliexpress for maybe $25).

When I finally get to check out, I get another spinning prize wheel. "100% off $100"!! Goddamn, I'm on a roll here. How do these guys make any money?!!

More time looking... I must have spent well over 4 hours on their app. Time to check out.

$67? Huh? What about 100% off and all that nonsense? Enter your phone number*

  • You must agree to get promotional texts, or you can't check out... hmm, maybe my wife wasn't wrong.

In any case, there was no way to actually get anything "free". I deleted the app, deleted my account, and will never touch this scam ever again.

Do people actually end up getting anything from Temu? I thought AliExpress was bad, but the experience is 1000x better.

TLDR: I uploaded a video to youtube but youtube's trained AI script kept avoiding picking a thumbnail I emebeded in the video no matter all tricks and changes I made to it. prompting me to deleted the video instead of sharing my phone number for the privilege of uploading a custom thumbnail.

First time trying to upload anything to youtube I knew that my effort will be wasted but I went with it none-the-less. I had spent two days recording a tutorial and hopping for a small view count, now I must say that I have dealt with google services in the past and my disappointment with them was unwatchable so I kinda had a previous taste of that.

I uploaded the video and worked on the thumbnail to only find out that I can't add the thumbnail without adding my phone number to the account. I was hesitant considering I care about my privacy but also wasn't sure if it was worth it, considering I didn't have high hopes for the channel. so I was given the choice of three thumbnails, one screenshot at the beginning one at the middle and the last one at the end of the video.

so I thought why no take advantage of that and re-encode the video with the thumbnail at the start and have youtube's script pick that. guest what ? I re-rendered the video six times changing the placement and length of display of the thumbnail at the beginning of the video. trying to animate the elements of the thumbnail and all sorts of tricks and nothing worked, youtube kept changing the time at which they picked the thumbnail and kept moving it further to the middle of the video all of this just so you can never post a video thumbnail without sharing your phone number.

I knew they were vicious but not to the point of allocating resources and training AI on these sorts of shenanigans. I miss those times when we had workarounds for every thing.

So, I never visit McDonald's. Oddly, I have managed to visit them twice this year. Once a month ago while traveling and it just worked out that it made the most sense when we stopped for fuel while traveling.

And second last night. We were at the lake late and coming home just before 9pm. Most non chain places were closing, and the only local spot open was McDonald's. Had the whole family including my visiting parents.

The experience was pretty awful. First, they had 3 employees in the building, and the expectation was that you use the Kiosk. I didn't have 'strong' opinions of having to use it vs. speaking to a human. However after ordering 4 meals on it, it is quite the nightmare for the casual visitor. Probably took 4x as long to order our food.

My parents took their order on a second Kiosk and were not even able to complete their order (Parents are in their mid 70s). Not sure what happened, I wasn't watching them. My dad was quite irritated at this point.

After asking one of the humans multiple times for help, he took their order at the register.

<insert 30 minute wait for food>

Our food was placed in their pickup area in bags with napkins (store napkin holder empty). Nearly every burger was overcooked and quite dry. Both my buns were hard. The fry's were luke warm and not very fresh. The meal for 2 adults and 2 14yos was $40 bux.

I saw a story on Lemmy last week about how McDonald's profits were down and the general consensus was that it was the over priced food. While I'm sure that has an impact I believe the Kiosk, slow 'fast food' and overall experience has to be a huge negative.

My parents were PISSED, and they are historically huge McD Patrons. At least in their case, the price will not be why they do not return. Its the awful experience.
