Also, Bukele's idea of putting a bunch of people in a mega-prison can't last forever.

supposedly, it's a short-term measure that is going to be followed by social policies

to be fair, it would be impossible to effectively apply any kind of social policy in their previous situation. if it was a left-wing government, i would support the crackdown, lumpens can be dangerous as fuck. the problem with it coming from the right is that i don't trust them to do the necessary social policies, and it's gonna end up the same it was, just with different people

also, what worries me is other latin american leaders wanting to do the same. el salvador's situation was uniquely bad, few places in the continent have anything remotely similar. for instance, it would be ridiculous to defend that kind of crackdown in brazil

i think they're just losing market share... germany has been getting screwed for years now, starting way before the energy issues

aside from the possible instances of relief (eg random years of a slight recovery within a long term trend of decline), this economic shift feels almost unavoidable

unless the west goes to war or some shit

I don't know why I still bother. That site achieves the unthinkable: it is way fucking worse than Twitter.

i'm pretty sure half of reddit users aren't even real people, or at least not real people expressing real opinions

if you go out in the streets there's no way you'd find that level or frequency of anti-palestine rhetoric. i mean, fuck, how many pro-israel protests have you seen and how many people were in those compared to pro-palestine ones?

"everything was so great in the 90s" says the guy who never paid attention to a 90s hip hop song in his life

i'm saying an ability to shoot down nukes is part of a larger equation of deterrents that makes the actual, effective use of nukes unlikely by israel in the near future

As far as we know, Israeli nukes are not integrated with the US.

nuclear missiles can be shot down mate, especially when the land which they're sent from is so small

and after yom kippur, when as far as we know the US was unaware that israel wanted to use nukes, or even that they had them, i'm sure they got their CIA plants on the ground watching

nukes are serious shit, really nobody wants them to be used

i wouldn’t be so sure that Israel wouldn’t use nukes without US approval. Israel isn’t a loyal hound that acts on command, its a rabid beast that even its master is afraid of sometimes

if it comes to that i think the US would shoot down any attemps, either interrupting the missile mid-flight (i imagine having the military over there isn't only to defend israel, though it does that 99% of the time, but to try and control the situation in general) or just by doing a coup or some shit after the order is given but before the missiles are launched

88% would be bothered by their son befriending an arab girl and 90% by their daughter befriending an arab boy

the numbers are pretty much the same israel is such a beacon of gender equality in the region 💕💞

i'll feel sorry for the children after this is over, but i'll not feel sorry for their parents if they're settlers, and i will absolutely dehumanize them

settlers are not "israeli citizens"

they're barely even people

i wonder if that keeps researchers from developing economies from becoming impactful, because $3k is like 15 months of a minimum wage in brazilian reais, and more than entire month's wages for 99.9% of our professors

edit: for the humanities this seems especially bad, it kind of makes it sure that western social thought remains dominant since only you guys can actually pay for it
