Agreed, i have heard of dual power amd parallel power structures. We need a lot more of them.

I guess maybe the sobering part of this read was the fact that maybe revolution will take a lot longer than we thought...so maybe our focus should be on building alternate community institutions and forming connections instead of focusing on big events like protests.

These people are too disconnected from reality, too prideful of their "intelligence" and "success" from their tech startups, and have read too much Isaac Asimov. smh.

These ones might be smaller, but:

  • Meet The Robinsons
  • Tomorrowland
  • Me. Peabody and Sherman
  • Everything, Everywhere, All At Once

I think these movies were really good because they actually moved you, in their own little way.

I agree with this post you made. If the best we can do is vote into office a fairly old, out-of-tuoch president who has done a moderately decent job of running the United States, then it's a lose-lose situation for everyone. Politics especially in the United States has become too boring and safe. We need to take a risk on Cornell West and spice the game up a bit. Else we'll repeat the same mistakes we've been making for the past 50 years.

Edit; pls forgive my passion posting, whoops. Point is we need a shake up cuz stuff is going down the drain a little

I'm not sure, but if it gets the ability to sync comments and posts across instances, i'd love that feature!

Ooh, thanks for your analysis! I never considered the "lack of choices" perspective.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah, i totally agree. Electoralisn is one path, however, if more people resist, it's a way better effort. The problem is just even getting people engaged right now. The main focus should be getting these structures and networks up and running, especially in underserved places like rural towns and impoverished areas.

At thsi point the only reasonable thing we can do is have a massive grossroots effort at local and state levels.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

you're probably right about that, i never thought of it that way!

I really loved her video on the notion of love in our society, and it brought up some important points about how love is commoditized, and how we often have unrealistic expectations for it.

We need outoftheloop, or something like that for lemmy, i enjoy reading all the juicy drama thats bound to come from the wonderful concoction of early unstable-ish foss software and people problems.

A good farming wiki I found. It will be helpful because it will help us learn how to grow plants.

  • [ ] GMOs are bad, but not for the reason you think.
    • [ ] Company called Monsanto (now under another company called Bayer) made a weedkiller called Roundup which contains glyphosate, which is a possible carcinogen
    • [ ] Roundup killed crops as well as weeds, so they sold GMO seeds that could withstand Roundup
    • [ ] However, due to the monopoly/doninance of Monsanto, a lot of food, both processed and unprocessed, contains GMOs, which also contain a lot of glyphosate (which may be bad for you)
    • [ ] To cover up further investigation of glyphosate, they captured and bribed the EPA to look the other way and even to support Monsanto's research -- at least until the WHO cane out in 2015 and said that glyphosate could be carcinogenic
    • [ ] So GMOs aren't inherently bad, but they can be used for evil purposes like these
    • [ ] So try and at least buy organic food or grow your own food to avoid glyphosate
    • [ ] However according to a youtube comment, Roundup is also used to make plants mature faster...

Edit: misspelling, changed Montesanto to Monsanto

A striking quote from Angela Davis:

"Women are in control of the weapons of war...We always seem prime to celebrate individual achievement, individual advancement of black people, women, people of color, without taking consideration that diversity, in itself, would mean that previously marginalized communities would be recruited to guaruntee a more efficient operation of oppersive systems" -- Angela Davis

I want to know you guy's thoughs and opinions on this quote.

I made this post because I really like the design of GNOME, and although i'd like customizability, it is mostly enough for my everyday needs. But I want to understand why people may choose other desktop environments..or why you would/would'nt use GNOME.

As the title says, what are all of the different futurisms, or like imaginings of the future?

So far in my sphere, i know of a few: solarpunk, cyberpunk, retrofuturism, and transhumanism.

  • solarpunk: green new decolonialized future where we use technology, natural systems, and cultual wisdom to live sustainably and in harmony with the Earth and others

  • cyberpunk: dystopia where technology is capable of many things, but is used in all the wrong ways. Megacorps control everything, and tech is ubiquitous

  • transhumanism: future where humans can overcome their linitations through technology, and we also delve into deeper questions of how technology and its use affects people

  • retrofuturism (i'm probably thinking more of atompunk, help me here???): Star Trek-esque, optimistic, 1900s view of the future with the typical flying cars, space hotels, and luxury comforts in a utopic setting

Can you guys think of any others? And if i'm wrong, please do correct me

I was thinking about this a litle bit. If we are enabling bootstrapping, shouldn't we do it in such a way where all the materials are easily acceesible to people?

I haven't fully thought this out, but could one way to self sufficiency be through organic chemistry and plastics engineering? Likw think about it. Plastics can be made in a variety of ways and styles, woth different properties, not to mention they can easily be formed from carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, etc, all of which are very easily accessible. I can acknowledge that there are a lot of risks, such as filtering out dangerous plastics or minimizing their use, as well as addressing plastic pollution, but if we can do it in the right way, we could have a viabke path towards common people/bootstrapped l collectives being able to make their own stuff cheaply.

Please corect me if I am wrong, and thank you for reading!
