Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:

There's a pretty good video about this by Not Just Bikes. Basically it says, the people who make these sort of decisions have a vested interest in more road construction because that pays their salary.

To save folks time looking for it, that video is More Lanes are (Still) a Bad Thing: Nebula link | YouTube link

Thanks. I was too lazy to post the link.

They just need one more lane, bro. Then the traffic problem will be solved. Just one more lane.

When will they realize that adding more lanes is the problem? When will the thought of improving public transit cross their minds? When will they consider making their cities more pedestrian and bicycle friendly?

Mainly because the 15 sucks ass from Ontario all the way to the south side of Corona, then sucks ass again at Temecula.

Adding more lanes will not fix that, there may be a short period of better flow but most lane widdening projects end up making congestion and traffic worse.

The only real way to fix traffic is provide viable alternatives to driving.

Very true, doesn't change the fact the 15 sucks ass. And I don't really foresee the IE investing on those alternatives, so I guess I'll take some shitty temporary progress over none.

Temecula is a shitshow, partly from all the recent construction. But it already has 5 lanes, and even more once you get to the 215 split. I never even see anyone on the toll roads (by comparison to the main freeway) south of Temecula, so if that's what they're putting in, maybe they should charge less if they actually expect people to use them.

I forgot Temecula already is pretty wide. I wonder if the expansion would be around Corona then.

Dude the 15 is super wide already. I'm surprised they're adding more lanes.

Wait wait I know this one. So the folks can have toll roads while us poors need to deal with the traffic the construction is going to make. For example, the 405 fwy from Costa Mesa to who the fuck knows.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 9 months ago

I405 in Washington has toll roads through the rich area that just got an increase to $18 at peak. Sucks to he poor.

fine people for camping in fast lane and don’t build more lanes, and have less accidents
