metafilter is not old web unfortunately. It used to be free, intelligent and fun, now it's just a neurotic censored mess, like most of the new web. It's an aging 
website. And it's bad. It is full of toxic dynamics, americanocentrism and ultimately, it is very boring.
It's both difficult to navigate AND an echo-chamber. It's useless.
