A community for your defence shitposting needs

Rules

1. Be niceDo not make personal attacks against each other, call for violence against anyone, or intentionally antagonize people in the comment sections.

2. Explain incorrect defense articles and takes

If you want to post a non-credible take, it must be from a "credible" source (news article, politician, or military leader) and must have a comment laying out exactly why it's non-credible. Low-hanging fruit such as random Twitter and YouTube comments belong in the Matrix chat.

3. Content must be relevant

Posts must be about military hardware or international security/defense. This is not the page to fawn over Youtube personalities, simp over political leaders, or discuss other areas of international policy.

4. No racism / hatespeech

No slurs. No advocating for the killing of people or insulting them based on physical, religious, or ideological traits.

5. No politics

We don't care if you're Republican, Democrat, Socialist, Stalinist, Baathist, or some other hot mess. Leave it at the door. This applies to comments as well.

6. No seriousposting

We don't want your uncut war footage, fundraisers, credible news articles, or other such things. The world is already serious enough as it is.

7. No classified material

Classified ‘western’ information is off limits regardless of how "open source" and "easy to find" it is.

8. Source artwork

If you use somebody's art in your post or as your post, the OP must provide a direct link to the art's source in the comment section, or a good reason why this was not possible (such as the artist deleting their account). The source should be a place that the artist themselves uploaded the art. A booru is not a source. A watermark is not a source.

9. No low-effort posts

No egregiously low effort posts. E.g. screenshots, recent reposts, simple reaction & template memes, and images with the punchline in the title. Put these in weekly Matrix chat instead.

10. Don't get us banned

No brigading or harassing other communities. Do not post memes with a "haha people that I hate died… haha" punchline or violating the sh.itjust.works rules (below). This includes content illegal in Canada.

11. No misinformation

NCD exists to make fun of misinformation, not to spread it. Make outlandish claims, but if your take doesn’t show signs of satire or exaggeration it will be removed. Misleading content may result in a ban. Regardless of source, don’t post obvious propaganda or fake news. Double-check facts and don't be an idiot.

Russian warship: "Snake Island, I, Russian warship, repeat the offer: put down your arms and surrender, or you will be bombed. Have you understood me? Do you copy?"

Ukrainian 1 to Ukrainian 2: "That's it, then. Or, do we need to fuck them back off?"

Ukrainian 2 to Ukrainian 1: "Might as well."

Ukrainian 1: "Russian warship, go fuck yourself."

Best part, that Russian warship was the Moskva. Pictured top-left, with the red X through it.

sunk by indigenously built ukranian neptune surface to surface missile no less. Very impressive!

On the he ships Wikipedia page (it was called the moslva):

Ukraine has officially declared the wreck of the ship to be an underwater cultural heritage site

[–] [email protected] 11 points 9 months ago

One of my favorite memes on the subject came from Sputnik_not "update: the fire is out" [picture of the ship underwater]

Only the Russians could lose their entire navy in a land war.

Twice

[–] [email protected] 15 points 9 months ago

I was wondering if this was similar to the Baltic Fleet and going down the comments looking for a reference. Lemmy did not disappoint

Youtuber Perun joked this week that the Houthis had done more to disrupt international shipping than the Russians had done in the Black Sea.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 9 months ago

Perun has some serious deadpan humor.

These things strike me as very... expensive.

Months for a single boat if your logistics are top tier. Years otherwise.

For the tonnage crossed of this list, easily close to a decade to replace.

easily close to a decade to replace.

For a nation with the money and manpower to actually build them. Not ones that can only afford to upcycle 5 fossils each decade with a new gun/missile silo and (maybe) coat of paint.

Rust can be protective. There's brown rust, orange rust, fast rust, slow rust. Wire wheels are expensive.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 9 months ago (1 children)

One rust two rust red rust blue rust

[–] [email protected] 7 points 9 months ago

Anyway, like I was sayin', rust is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, sauté it. Dey's uh, rust-kabobs, rust creole, rust gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple rust, lemon rust, coconut rust, pepper rust, rust soup, rust stew, rust salad, rust and potatoes, rust burger, rust sandwich. That- that's about it.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 9 months ago

Fair point.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Yeah I’m pretty sure haven’t built a surface combatant larger than a frigate since the fall of the USSR.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

They might have had a second aircraft carrier by now if they'd finished the one left in Ukraine at the collapse in 91. But for better or worse they sold the hulk (and the plans) to China in '99. It's possible the Kuznetsov is in such a state because the sold the only copy of the plans

[–] [email protected] 6 points 9 months ago

Irony a lot of these were built in Soviet Ukraine, so nice to see them laid to rest in their home 🥰

[–] [email protected] 8 points 9 months ago

Boats are expensive. I know because I was a sailor, and then worked in ship building/repair.

at what point can we call this the most embarrassing war for the Russian navy since the Russo-Japanese war?

[–] [email protected] 18 points 9 months ago

You can start anytime.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 9 months ago

It already is. But that a big hurdle to cross

[–] [email protected] 20 points 9 months ago

Sink em all

[–] [email protected] 17 points 9 months ago

With no fleet left they don't need the black sea ports anymore and can get the fuck out of Crimea, right?

[–] [email protected] 15 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (2 children)

What's the story behind the one circled ship? Captured?

[–] [email protected] 11 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

I think it's this one. Attacked twice, probably partially sunk in port.

The insert b&w photo is of another ship sunk a couple of days ago by drone boats, with great footage (https://sopuli.xyz/post/8635610). It's the small one in the row above the circled ship.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 9 months ago

I like to imagine at least one of these remaining ships probably doesn't even exist and is just a big embezzlement. It would be par for the course with Russia.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I think I'mma print this one out for my bulletin board so I can keep score at home...

[–] [email protected] 2 points 9 months ago

Legit fun idea.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 9 months ago (2 children)

which one just happened a day or so ago? the letters are tiny, so relying on someone who knows their ships!

[–] [email protected] 11 points 9 months ago

Well, they said it was a corvette, so most likely the one ~7 down and 3 in. It seems like it's the right profile

[–] [email protected] 8 points 9 months ago

The small "Ivanovets" in the center, the row above the circled one, I believe: https://sopuli.xyz/post/8635610.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 9 months ago

Ukraine is the last opponent I would want to have in a game of Battleships

[–] [email protected] 4 points 9 months ago

What is that? Looks like the biggest remaining ship.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Still can't believe they sunk a fucking DDG with an MLRS lmfao

[–] [email protected] 5 points 9 months ago

I wonder when ol' Kuznetsov will meet its fate? Thing can hardly sail as is. Even if Ukraine doesn't take it out, the ship'll probably do the job itself.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 9 months ago

Everybody edging, waiting for the kep

[–] [email protected] 3 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (2 children)

So wait, is that the entire Russian fleet?

I would have thought they had more.

[–] [email protected] 19 points 9 months ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 8 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Their ship-to-submarine conversion program is so far a great success.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Lately they have decided to allocate a larger share of their fleet to protect the sea bed

[–] [email protected] 5 points 9 months ago

By the size of the chart I think it's the black sea fleet and they can't bring any warships through the Bosporus during war time.
