I think it's a horses for courses thing. From what I understand, Chongqing for example is densely populated and has variable elevation which would make streetcars/trams less suitable for above-ground transport. Having monorail sidesteps some of these issues.

my parents are from chongqing and i'm going back next summer. I can't wait to see the public transit! I haven't been back in quite a few years(pre pandemic) and i'm exited to take the metro and HSR(i at least remember riding that the last time I was in china)
