Jerboa
Jerboa is a native-android client for Lemmy, built using the native android framework, Jetpack Compose.
Warning: You can submit issues, but between Lemmy and lemmy-ui, I probably won't have too much time to work on them. Learn jetpack compose like I did if you want to help make this app better.

That's the same combination I use on my luggage!
Lemmy has hard coded censorship. It can be disabled via the code, but irrc not via config. It was a large source of criticism, even 3 years ago: https://linuxreviews.org/Lemmy
It is a server config option. Lemmy.ml uses a banned word list, while other instances don't. The words are still there and visible from instances that don't censor.
This doesn't seem to quite be true, based on my testing in the comment here.
It seems that if your comment is made on a censored instance, the word is completely replaced, and isn't visible to non-censored instances.
If this isn't accurate and you know more about how the code actually works, I'd love to know what the details are.
Are there any instances that you know of that disable the censorship? I already got my fill of cybernannies on Reddit.
Edit: My alt on sh.itjust.works can see the censored words, and it defederates with much fewer instances than lemmy.ml. Seems like migrating over there is the best choice.
Edit 2: I think I've finally figured it out based on what my sh.itjust.works account shows:
- If you're on a censored instance, all words will be blocked no matter what
- If you're on a non-censored instance looking at a comment from a censored instance, that comment will still show up as removed
- If you're on a non-censored instance looking at a comment from a non-censored instance, the comment won't be censored
When I'm on my sh.itjust.works profile, the comment by @[email protected] isn't censored, but mine still is. So, the censorship gets you both coming and going - no censored words can make it into a censored instance, and no censored words can make it out either.
I've just edited all of my scripts to point to my sh.itjust.works profile instead of lemmy.ml. Wish there was a way to migrate comments and posts over, but no biggie.
Has anyone made a multi-Lemmy yet? Where all of your posts and comments from all of your profiles can show up in one place?
(also, what's the formatting for double-spacing after a list?)
Are there any instances that you know of that disable the censorship?
Considering that the list of words contains ones that a NSFW/porn instance would probably want allowed, my guess is one of those.
Lemmy has hard coded censorship
I've noticed that a few of my comments wouldn't actually post. The word for when you commit Sudoku (suicide) seems to be on the no-no list. I also wanted to comment about a weapon known by a two letter designation (AK) and that wasn't allowed either.
Edit: seems like it might be some instances only.
I need to test this
Fuck, shit, ass, bitch. Let's see which words get removed if any
Shit, piss, fuck, cunt, cocksucker, motherfucker, tits, fart, turd, and twat

I'm open-source, check me out at GitHub.
In case you want to know, your 5th word is "removed" when viewed from lemmy.ml
Cheers
And only the fifth word?
I find that hilarious for some reason.
Yup, only the fifth word.
None removed, your instance doesn't block naughty word. (At least not these)
Pretty sure that's not it. People are saying removed as a joke. It's a filter for slurs, not swears.
I'm pretty sure they removed the hardcoded filter as a result of the original discussion.
Whore
Fuck
I can see everyone's swears. Nothing seems to be censored for me. Is it because lemmy.world doesn't censor or is it because Voyager (third party app) doesn't censor?
Instance level i think, sopuli.xyz
I thought that was just formatting, as a joke?
Testing: removed
Edit: LMAO
Testing: whore, bitch.
Removed? Did you type "bitch" and it was removed?
Not a Jerboa specific issue
Wait, words are censored on Lemmy.ml!? What the titting fuck?? If I want to read "naughty words", that's my right as a grown-ass twat! These bitches have now pissed me right off...
This was your original comment on feddit.nl:
...and this is what it looks like on lemmy.ml / Jerboa:
Meanwhile on Beehaw, where the only rule is to be nice, I can say “bitch bitch bitchity bitch” all I want, as long as I'm nice about it.
Which, I guess, limits its applications to discussions about dogs.
Certain words are being censored. I really don't love it but we can all fill in the blanks.
The great thing about the fediverse is that if some instance does something you don't like, you can just switch.
Fair point, but then I'm starting from scratch again which I'd prefer not to do. I think the censorship is dumb but I can live with it.
That's not how it's supposed to work. The theoretical concept (and a selling point, really) is that you can move your entire account elsewhere. In practice, it's not implemented yet for Lemmy, afaik.
It's on the roadmap.
If you run it through google translate, it's a little more... colorful that that...
