I'd love to browse "all" but so far my experience has just been a slew of porn, languages I don't speak, and other stuff I have zero interest in seeing in my lemmy-based doomscrolling.

None of it is anything I think beehaw should defderate from. It's not wrong or against beehaw's standards. But for my idle time, it's just noise that gets in the way of finding anything else interesting.

I did some googling and it looks like this sort of thing is being looked at for lemmy as a whole, but I was hoping someone may have a trick to do it without the lemmy system supporting it directly.

On desktop, I could easily add a userscript to remove the instance domains, but not so much on mobile apps.

Am I alone in this frustration?

I have noticed the same thing but I kinda don't mind. It's like a restart from reddit, so we have to follow the evolution of the platform. Although I gave to say amongst the slew of porn and low effort posts, there is some good stuff on tech at the very least.

I think my big irritation is that it's super distracting to keep hitting block on the seemingly infinite supply of communities on lemmynsfw ;D

But it's also annoying that none of the apps (lemmy pwa included) actively clear the feed of your newly blocked user/community.

I enjoy scrolling All to find new and interesting things, and that's how I built my sub list on the oldsite. It's just frustratingly difficult to filter signal from noise at the moment.

I'm very late to this post, but Voyager for Lemmy (currently at wefwef.app) has a block server alongside the block community action, which might fit your needs.

Was finding it annoying too, so instead of scrolling and blocking things as I happened upon them, I pulled up lists of things to block by searching for keywords of stuff I know I'm disinterested in.

It isn't ideal but it made it a lot faster and less fiddly. Unfortunately it doesn't seem possible yet to search by instance name, so I couldn't use this method to pull up a list of every community on instances with a high prevalence of stuff I don't want to see.

For keeping porn out, go into settings and deselect "show NSFW content". I don't think Beehaw has NSFW content, but this setting should keep a lot of it out of your "All" feed (if it has been correctly marked).

I'm considering just making a script to get a list of communities from an instance and submit them to my block list automatically. Heavily rate limited, of course.

You can try making an account with an instance that bans NSFW instances (such as geddit.social) and use that as your main account and the other as your NSFW one.

The Connect app on Android has a block instance feature now, thankfully! I was having the exact same issue with all the porn and posts in languages I don't speak. I'm so thankful for this app and that feature. The dev is really good about listening to and implementing feature requests like that and I highly suggest the app.

Now, that doesn't solve the problem on Desktop or other apps, but it's very helpful and I think it's the best we've got right now.

Maaan I got so excited by this and grabbed Connect. It was great until I saw it completely blocking comments in threads by users from those instances. :(

I think I read that Kbin has this feature, but I can't find the reference just now.

Kbin user here, you can't block an entire instance (yet), what the current domain block does is blocks all content linking to that specific domain. We can filter posts by languages in the settings (not sure if Lemmy has that feature) and block individual magazines which has been pretty good at helping me clear up my All feed.

You're definitely not alone in the frustration:

This feature is coming in Lemmy 0.19:

Analogous to the existing community block functionality, users can also block instances. This means that all content from communities which are hosted there is hidden. Posts from users of blocked instances are still visible in other places.
