Less obvious to the present, but 'servant' comes from 'bread eater' and 'lady' comes from 'bread kneader'

Because the guy who keeps the bread (money) is the guy in charge usually.

It's surprising, to me, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised the world revolved around bread at some point in time. Neat.
