The RTS formula needs something for the casual player. As a SC - SCII noob I felt exhausted after try-harding a couple of matches and while it was fun, it felt too much of an effort

You are right. There has been some attempt with archon mode and coop missions, though. But individual play is still difficult and intimidating. I stopped at Gold league and never really progressed because I kept being beaten. Thus I retreated to campaigns and coop missions.
Idk if it's back. There really is nothing like Red Alert or Generals still.
